Tommie Smith and John Carlos Monument

Across from Clark Hall we have the most prominent monuments on campus. Tommie Smith and John Carlos organized and took part in an extremely pivotal moment in history in 1968. They were SJSU students during the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, in which Tommie Smith won the gold medal and John Carlos won the bronze medal in the 200 meter sprint. They held a silent protest against racism and injustice against African-Americans in the United States. During the National Anthem, they raised their fists in the air wearing a black glove to represent Black Power and Unity. They also took their shoes off and wore black socks to represent black poverty in America. Tommie Smith held an olive tree branch sapling in his left hand to represent peace, and John Carlos is wearing a colorful chain around his neck to represent the lynchings of America's past. The man in second place was an Australian runner named Peter Norman. He asked not to be a part of the statue because he didn't want to take away from the meaning of it. These men got their medals taken away and were banned from the Olympics for this silent protest, until 2019 when they were inducted into the Olympic Hall of Fame and got their medals back. Tommie Smith and John Carlos are still active on campus sharing their stories to inspire our students. This monument still acts as a centerpiece of social justice movements for our students and community.

housing CV2

At our last stop, we have the Residence Halls, which we call the Campus Village. CV2 A 10 story residence hall houses 850 first year students and has an open community design Looks like a 2 from an Aerial view

Sweeney Hall

Home to the college of education. Sweeney hall also has many educational labs that include a reading lab, a remote computer lab, and a child development toddler lab which is used for hands-on experience with toddlers for child development majors. Students are able to earn teaching credentials through the College of education.

Robert D. Clark Hall

Moving on, we will talk about Robert D. Clark Hall which is home to majors such as anthropology, humanities, linguistics, political science, and chicana and chicano studies. Clark Hall is also home to the Equal Opportunity Program, which also goes by EOP. EOP helps first generation college students and those who come from a low socioeconomic background. It offers students various educational opportunities such as mentorship and summer bridge programs, class registration, scholarship applications, and acquiring textbooks.

Duncan hall

In terms of our science department, it is deviated into the Science building and Duncan hall. Science education is provided for engineers, health care professionals, K-12 teachers, and other technical fields, as well as basic mathematics and science skills for students in non-science majors. Some of our top majors include Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Computer Science.

Charles W. Davidson College of Engineering

Looking over to the building behind you all is the Charles w.Davidson College of Engineering. This building houses the most popular and impacted majors on campus. With its hands-on learning environment, applied research opportunities, and interdisciplinary projects with industry professionals, SJSU's continues to earn top rankings among national public engineering programs offering bachelor's and master's degrees which we are placed fourth out of the top 10. Some of the concentrations the engineering program provides are general engineering, Aerospace engineering, biomedical engineering, and environmental and software engineering. Aerospace is one of the most popular forms of engineering on campus and Nasa Ames Research center is 15 miles from campus making it easy for students to get opportunities at Nasa. Also, a fun fact in 2019 are aerospace engineering students teamed up with NASA to build a satellite that has been sent to space, in that same year students within the engineering department built SJSU's first self driving vehicles.

Lucas College And Graduate School Of Business

Moving on from one of our largest majors to another. To the right of me are the Boccardo Business Complex and the Business Tower. The Lucas College and Graduate School of Business is the largest contributor of business graduates to Silicon Valley and a major contributor to what Silicon Valley is today. Many of our students at San Jose State earn jobs and internships with different companies such as Facebook, Google, Tesla, and Adobe. Many of these companies love hiring our students because we are right in their backyard! Because of this success, we are the number one supplier of education, engineering, computer science, and business graduates to Silicon Valley, the world's high-tech capital. We have over 15 focuses and concentrations within the business department including business marketing, hospitality, tourism, and event management, international business, finance, entrepreneurship, and a handful of other concentrations.

Dudley Moorhead Hall

Moving on to my left is Dudley Moorhead Hall. Some majors found in this building are psychology, sociology, & other social sciences. It also houses our Instructional Resource Center (IRC) where all students can rent any type of media and electronic equipment for free. The IRC has video & photography cameras, projectors, projector screens, microphones, speakers and other forms of recording equipment that is free to any student that comes with their student ID.

School of Music and Dance

Moving on to our Music Building... Inside you'll find a concert hall that can seat up to 500 students. Graduates of the Music Program make up and extensive community of outstanding music teachers, award-winning composers, and active performers concertizing throughout the world. Annual merit-based scholarships totaling over $250,000 per year are awarded to gifted music majors.

Spartan Recreation and Aquatic Center

The SRAC is our on campus gym free for students. This facility contains cardio and strength equipment, three full court gyms for basketball, volleyball, badminton etc., an indoor track, a climbing wall and bouldering area, a lap pool that is heated with a sun deck attached which tends to get busy with students during the hotter months of the year. There are also study rooms located on the second floor, which is a personal favorite place of mine to study because of the big windows and comfy chairs.

Interdisciplinary Science Building

One exciting addition to our campus is the Interdisciplinary Science Building. This building is the starting point for us to reimagine our science department and integrate new technologies. The building will be operational this Fall Semester. The Building will include sustainable design features, research labs, and tutoring centers. When the building was in the planning phase, SJSU sent out a survey to students to ask them what they wanted from the building, and students were clear that making the building sustainable was the goal. It will be SJSUs most sustainable building and one of the most in San Jose as well. For the time being, Duncan hall is currently where most of our science laboratories are located. The bottom floor has an anatomy lab where students get hands-on experience with cadavers. We also have a Fire Weather Research Laboratory, which is the most well-equipped research laboratory in the United States. These features and more will extend into our new science building in the coming years.

Spartan Complex

Spartan Complex houses the rest of our Kinesiology department. In this building, we have a gymnasium, along with 3 full-size basketball courts, a pool, a gymnastics facility, and a biomechanics laboratory. Now, unless you are an engineering student or transfer student, you have to take PE units. it's not like high school PE where you run the mile every day or do a bunch of push-ups & sit-ups. Instead, you can take low-impact sports such as walking, or cycling. Leisure-based classes like bowling or you can take P.E. units in other sports like volleyball, basketball, and soccer.

Spartan Memorial

Spartan Memorial serves as a site to honor all SJSU students that served in World War II. - It was also a chapel that offered marriages for $25 - However, it now serves as a nondenominational facility and can be reserved for prayer, meetings, readings, and weddings

Cesar Chaves Monument

The Cesar Chavez Monument was dedicated to Cesar Chavez in 2008 by Judith Baca. Chavez lived in San Jose for a period of time before he passed away. The monument was built in dedication to his contributions to the United Farm Workers Union and the Civil Rights Movement. You can see Mahatma Gandhi and Dolores Huerta. Gandhi was Chavez's inspiration for peace, unity, and activism and Dolores Huerta was Chavez's partner in the United Farm Workers movement. On the other side, there are two farm workers holding short handle plows, which represents the banning of the short handle plow in fieldwork which was one of the movement's greatest successes. Baca purposely hid the farm workers' faces to advocate for the Latin, Asian, and African-American communities as well. On the inside of the archway, you will see Cesar Chavez along with Robert Kennedy. Baca said, "Cesar Chavez is not on the front because he's a very humble man, and he has always put others first." Baca built this to educate and inspire those passing through it to experience hope, inspiration, and activism for social and environmental justice.

Macquarrie Hall

The College of Applied Science and Arts is located in MacQuarrie Hall. The Forensic Science department organizes mock crime scenes for students on this lawn each semester. MacQuarrie hall is the only classroom building with no classrooms on the first level. Instead, there is the Ginger Market which contains a variety of Asian foods and uses the first autonomous computer AI-powered checkout system in Silicon Valley. With this, you are able to go in, scan an app to check in, grab whatever you want, and leave the store, so you never have to wait in lines.

Diaz Compean Student Union (first half)

The Diaz Compean student union is a place where students can study, relax, eat, shop, and access on-campus resources. the student union houses campus departments and student organizations. Our Journalism students also produce, shoot, and write featured stories for national news, such as CNN and NBC Bay Area.

Provident Credit Union Event Center

The event center hosts concerts, guest speakers, and sporting events. It is also home to our Division 1 SJSU basketball teams. Students get free admission to all sporting events with their student ID. The Event Center hosts performers like Drake, Miguel, Odeza, and even Bay Area artists like E-40 and P-Lo! SJSU also puts on free concerts every year that are voted on by students. On top of live performances at the Event Center, SJSU also has partnerships with local sports teams that offer discounted tickets for students to the San Jose Sharks, San Francisco Giants, San Francisco 49ers, and Golden State Warriors. These discounts make big sporting events accessible for students and allow students to experience all that the Bay Area has to offer. In terms of our school's athletes, our South Campus is less than a 10-minute drive away and offers a new experience for sporting events. At South Campus, you will find our football stadium, soccer fields, tennis courts, softball field, and beach volleyball courts. All student-athletes also have their own gym to prepare for sporting events. Since our major sporting events are separate from our main campus, we do offer a shuttle service to events that are free to all students with their Student ID.

7th Street Plaza

The most busiest part of campus is the 7th street plaza. 7th street plaza is where our 350+ clubs and organizations set up tables where students can interact and connect with groups that fit their interests. One of the best ways to network here at SJSU is by joining clubs or organizations!

Student Wellness Center

The new health and wellness center was opened in 2017 and is adjacent to Penn Pavilion. It is home to a number of services for students, including a full pharmacy, radiology unit, massage therapy, and various relaxation spaces. The Student Health office is in this building, along with DuWell and Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). Bringing these various departments together into one space allows for a more holistic approach to student care. (can mention how you can get medication for cheap)

Industrial Studies

The next building we will be walking to is the Industrial Studies Building which houses are department of Aviation and technology and our testing services office. SJSU is the only school in the CSU system that provides aviation as a major, and with a bachelor, our students also can obtain a pilot license simultaneously. 1991, United Airlines donated 726-200 airplanes for SJSU students to use, which is used for students get acquainted with the mechanics of a plane. Glass, ceramics

student union (other half)

The other half of the student union has restaurants to name some Hala, Taco Bell, Panda Express, and Jamba Juice and there is a cafe and also a small shop where you can buy snacks.

SCIENCE BUILDING

The science building is home of the College of science. The science building houses the department of physics and astronomy and is also home to the department of chemistry's organic teaching and research laboratories. If you look to the left of this building, you will be able to see the "Growing Roots Of Wellness" garden, which was created by our Spartans.

Student Services Center/ North Parking Garage

The student services Center is located where North Garage is if you look to your right very corner of the school (you can't really see it from here). This building houses multiple departments that are important for your success as a student here. The offices you will find there are undergraduate admissions and outreach, financial aid and scholarships office, Bursar's office, Peer connections, and much more. Peer connection offers free services such as tutoring, mentoring, and learning assistance.

tower lawn

The tower lawn is where a lot of events are held. Such as Fire at the Fountain which happens during homecoming (instead of water coming out of the fountain there is fire). there are varieties of performances at Fire at the Fountain. And a fun fact, SJSU Alumnus Gaylord Nelson was the primary founder of Earth Day. SJSU's Earth Day event is held on tower lawn every year for students to participate in and hosts fun events such as planting workshops and yoga!

Hugh Gillis hall

This building has our Theatre Arts department and our Radio, Television and Film (RTVF) department. Students are given a range of film production experiences that have resulted in multiple feature-length and short-subject films, students have access to our green room where they can work with a green screen and other film equipment. We also have our very own radio station that is run by our students, KSJS 90.5 FM. Our RTVF department has generated some famous alumni such as Luis Valdez who created and directed the first Chicano play on Broadway called Zoot Suit. His son, Kinan Valdez, directed the play for students in 2015 with the help of our theatre of arts department.

Yoshihiro Uchida Hall (Y.U.H)

This building is shared by the Kinesiology, Student-Athlete Success Services, and Public Health departments. It is also home to our judo program led by our alumnus and professor Yoshihiro Uchida who introduced judo to the Tokyo Olympic games in 1964. There is also a display of olympic medals earned by SJSU graduates in this building. You can find the dojo for our Judo program on the second floor of Y.U.H. On the first floor we have a sports medicine facility where students with Athletic Training or Rehab Sciences concentrations can earn work experience with our Division 1 student-athletes.

dining comms (DC)

This college food court has various counters, from Italian, Mexican, vegan, and Asian food. My favorite part of the food court is the dessert counter.

The College of Professional and Global Education

To the left of me is The College of Professional and Global Education which is also a part of the Student Union. Students who are interested in Studying Abroad can attend an informational meeting and determine if they want to take a faculty-led program, international student exchange program, or attend another university for either a semester or year abroad.

Tower Hall/ Morris Dailey

Tower Hall was built in 1910 and is the oldest building on campus, and considering SJSU is the oldest CSU, Tower Hall is also the oldest building in the CSU system. Tower Hall was made to replace a building similar to it that was damaged in the 1906 earthquake. In 1963, Tower Hall was scheduled for demolition because of earthquake concerns, but was halted by a protest held by alumni and students. This protest shifted the demolition to a retrofitting that made Tower Hall earthquake resistant. Tower Hall houses Morris Dailey Auditorium which seats more than 1,000 students for large lectures, ceremonies and guest speakers. While attending SJSU some lectures could reach about 500 students but don't freak out, your classes won't always be that large. Our average class size is 30 students.

Washington Square Hall

Washington Square Hall, is home to a variety of majors such as African-American Studies, Environmental Studies, and the Office of Sustainability. The office of sustainability focuses on paving the way for SJSU to become an environmentally conscious campus. We have won multiple awards for different sustainable efforts. And a fun fact, some scenes from the movie Flubber, starring Robin Williams, were filmed in one of the lecture rooms.

Art & Design Building

We will now head toward the Art Building which is behind you all. The Art Building houses two departments. The Department of Design and the Department of Art & Art History. The Art department is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. The Department of Art & Art History is committed to providing our students with the tools and experience needed to successfully pursue a career in the arts. We're known for our Animation/Illustration program with a lot of our alumni going on to find success working with different companies like Disney, Pixar, Dreamworks, Nickelodeon, and Cartoon Network. Some movies our alumni have worked on include: the Star Wars prequels, Brave, Finding Dory, How to Train your Dragon 1, 2, and 3, the live-action Cinderella movie, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (which won an academy award for Best Animated Feature in 2018), and The Incredibles 1 and 2. Speaking of the Incredibles, if you watch the very last scene you will notice that the character Dash is racing in a stadium that is designed as our spartan football stadium. The stadium scoreboard has the spartan head on it and the track also says Go spartans. This was a shout-out from our alumni who worked on the movie!
