Slope Formula
The slope 'm' of a line passing through points (x₁, y₁) and (x₂, y₂) is the ratio of the difference in the 'y' coordinates to the corresponding difference in the 'x' coordinates. Stated symbolically: SLOPE [m] = y₂ - y₁ / x₂ - x₁, where x₂ ≠ x₁ IMPORTANT NOTE: it does not matter which point you define as (x₁, y₁) and (x₁, y₂) However, the coordinates of BOTH points must be used in the SAME order.
Finding Slope Using a Table
If the points provided in a table all lie on a line, then choose two points [that is ordered pairs of 'x' and 'y' coordinates] to find the changes in the 'x' and 'y' values. SLOPE = change in 'y' values divided by the change in 'x' values If the change in 'y' values = 9 -12, and of the change is 'x' values = 3-1 Then the slope of this line is -3/2. Finding Slope Using a Graph
If the vertical change [rise] of a line on a graph is 2 units, while the horizontal change [run] of the same line on a graph is 3 units, then SLOPE = rise/run = 2/3, which means the slope of this line 2/3. Rise and Run
The RISE is the VERTICAL distance between the two points on the graph. The RUN is the HORIZONTAL distance between the two points on the graph.
Slope
The constant rate of change of a line called the SLOPE of the line. Slope is the ratio of the RISE, or vertical change over the RUN, or horizontal change. SLOPE = RISE / RUN In other words, SLOPE is the VERTICAL change between any two points divided by the HORIZONTAL change in any two points
