Sociology Paired Concepts
Global
relationship to the world as a whole
Inequality
Uneven distribution of social resources (wealth, education, food, access to power...)
Privilege
being on the favorable side of inequality, with more resources
Solidarity
belonging/connection to a group "us". (unfortunately it causes conflict, bc to have an "us" you need to have a "them")
Conflict
distrust/disconnect to a group, "them" (strengthens solidarity)
Power
individual(s) being able to control the conduct of others (we're OK with this a lot of the time, actually. Agreeing to pay our phone bills. Doing what our boss says. There's often good reason to obey authorities)
social structures
reinforced every time we obey something we were socialized to do - hold a door open for a woman, act suspicious of a black student for doing the same thing a white one got away with...
Local
relationship to community
Contingency
social structures' openness to change, since no outcome is definite and we can change them over time
Structure
social structures, from politics to population density, help determine how we live and interact w each other.
Resistance
struggle against power (bc people aren't oo keen on being forced to do things)
