ASIA impairment scale- C

Incomplete- motor function is preserved below the neurological level and more than half of key muscles below the neurological level have a muscle grade less than 3.

ASIA impairment scale- D

Incomplete- motor function is preserved below the neurological level, and at least half of key muscles below the neurological level, have a muscle grade of 3 or more.

ASIA impairment scale- B

Incomplete- sensory but not motor function is preserved below neurolgical level and includes the sacral segments S4-S5

Posterior Cord Syndrome

-dorsal columns are affected (which transmit vibration and proprioception sensation) -results from compression of the spinal cord (usually from a tumor) -impaired proprioception (knowing where the body is in space)

Anterior Cord Syndrome

-lesion -results from flexion injury -variable motor and sensory loss and preservation of proprioception

Conus Medullaris Syndrome

-lesions to sacral cord and lumbar nerve roots within the spinal canal -A-reflexic bladder, bowel and LE's

Cuada Equina Syndrome

-lower motor neuron injury to the lumbrosacral nerve roots within the spinal canal -A-reflexic bldader, bowel and LE's

Complete SCI

-no motor/sensory functions 3 levels below injury -only 3% experience some recovery within 24 hours after injury -primary injury (initial SC lesion injury to surrounding tissues)

Incomplete SCI

-there is residual motor/sensory function 3 levels below injury -accounts for the SC syndromes -there is a chance of nerve regeneration and potential for functional return.

Brown Sequard Syndrome

-Half (one side) is damaged -results from gunshot or knife, penetrating wound -Ipsilateral proprioceptive and motor loss and contralateral loss of pain and temperature sensation

Central Cord Sydrome

"walking quad" -incomplete injury most common to cervical region in which the center part of the cord is damaged -results from a hyperextension -greater weakness in the UE's than in the LE's with sacral sparing

ASIA impairment scale- A

Complete- no motor or sensory function is preserved in the sacral segments S4-S5

ASIA impairment scale- E

Normal- motor and sensory functions are normal
