Forced choice

"Tell me what Jenny does with the flower seeds. She plants them or waters them?" No right or wrong answer in forced choice

Preparatory set

"The kind eats the grapes. The queen eats the watermelon. Now you tell me about the prince" (he eats the apple)

Cloze task

"look what Jeff did to the paper cup. He _____. (smashed it)"

Purpose of the focused stimulation activities that are used in MSI

-child is provided with numerous contextually relevant examples of a specific linguistic form -target a certain word in activity so they hear it and produce it over and over again -like auditory bombardment, but within a meaningful context!

Theoretical basis of MSI

-finite morphemes are harder than other grammatical morphemes -intervention that focuses on finite morphemes and indirectly on final clusters --> improvement in morphosyntax and phonology -improvement in final clusters --> learning less complex aspects of phonology (e.g. singletons)

4 types of elicited production activity used in MSI (from most to least support)

-imitation (most support) -forced choice -cloze task -preparatory set (least support)

Goal of MSI

-improve in both phonology and morphosyntax -accomplished through combo of naturalistic & clinician directed techniques

Target Populations

-preschoolers w/ morphosyntactic-based language disorders & comorbid SSD -finite morphemes used in <40% obligatory contexts -MLU of at least 2 -older kids w/ developmental delay or ELL

Types of recast if child incorrectly uses target morpheme

-simple recast -growth recast

MSI General structure of therapy

1. Theme based activities (natural repetition and intro of new vocab)...all lang components targeted indirectly 2. 2 FS tasks: many contexually relevant examples of target (at least 40) 3. 1 elicited production activity: necessary! -clincian support faded overtime

Target morphemes in MSI

4 speech sounds & 4 grammatical morphemes -regular/irregular past tense -third person singular -copula "be" -auxiliary "be" -possessives (non-finite) -plurals (non-finite)

Overview

Directly targets finite morphemes Indirectly targets: -phonological structures (final singletons and clusters) -other areas of language (vocab, direction-following, story-retelling, and social-pragmatics)

Dosage of MSI therapy

Therapy twice a week 1 ind. 30 minute session and 1 small group 45 minute session (2-4 kids) for 1 academic year weekly worksheet provided for each target for home practice

Mastermind(s) behind MSI

Tyler

MSI goal attack strategy

a cyclic approach to targeting morphemes using alternating or block strategies 4 speech sounds and 4 grammatical morphemes targeted cyclically over the course of one academic year (24 weeks of therapy)...8 week blocks repeated 3x

Growth recast

correct adult form in new sentence that expands the child's utterance. "he licks the red bowl"

Simple recast

repeat child utterance using correct form. "he lick the bowl" "he licks the bowl"
