What is the goal of succession

Equilibrium. Balance

What is a pioneer species

A pioneer species is the first species to populated and area. Primary = bacteria and lichens secondary = weeds and grasses and fart face

Succession

A series of predictable changes that occur in a community overtime due to events in the environment. The changes may happen suddenly or very slowly.

Climax community

A stable group of bio diverse plants and animals that is the end result of a succession process. Does not always mean Big trees. Equilibrium restored. State of balance. No sudden changes in the community

Secondary = Soil "S"

Begins in a place that already has soil and was once a home of living organisms secondary = soil

Key idea

Biodiversity contributes to the sustainability of an ecosystem. Morgan bio diversity = more sustainibiity

Succession

Is the gradual process of change and replacement of the type of species in a community. During succession the organisms within an ecosystem can change it's abiotic conditions. This allows better adapted organisms to colonize the area up replacing its current inhabitants

Soil

Larger plants with deep roots continue to break up rock and make more soil. Fertile soil is made up of the broken rocks, Decatur organisms, water and air.

Mosses

Mosses breakdown rock and add more soil and insects begin to move in. Grasses and small plants protect the soil and add more nutrients. The simple plants die adding more organic material. The soil layer thickens and grasses wildflowers and other plants begin to take over. These plants die and they add more nutrients to the soil. Shrubs and small trees can survive now. More insects, Ma birds, and small mammals had began to move in. What was once bear rock now supports a variety of life.

Identify two natural disturbances and two human disturbances that can result in secondary succession

Natural disturbances force fire hurricanes volcanoes tornadoes. Human disturbances farming logging and Mining

Primary succession

Occurs when an organisms colonizes a lifeless habitat. The development of plant and animal life in an area where NO ecosystem previously existed. Eventually primary succession will lead to equilibrium. Primary = rock "R" Primary occurs on lava flow, rocks, cliffs and Sand dunes. Examples of primary succession. And area for op I'm covered by a melting ice sheet. A new island formed by a ruction of a undersea volcano. Human made ponds.

Secondary succession

Occurs when organisms recolonize a devastated ecosystem

Pioneer species

Pioneer species are the first species to populated in the area. Bacteria and lichen are the first to appear. Lichen are a combination of fungus and algae. Pioneer species roots act like wedges to break up rocks. Soil start to form as So as lichen the forces of the weather and erosion help break down rocks into smaller pieces. When Lichens die they decompose adding small amounts of organic matter to the rock to make soil.

Key ideas

Primary succession occurs where no previous ecosystem exists and Establishes equilibrium. Secondary succession occurs after a disturbance and restores equilibrium

Key idea

Reaching a stable community can take centuries. Centuries equal 100 or more years

Secondary succession

Secondary succession - The series of changes that occur after a disturbance in an existing ecosystem. It is different from a primary succession where no life existed

Grass poking through the cracks in the sidewall is an example of succession is this primary or secondary succession

Secondary succession before the side wall was built an ecosystem existed there

Secondary succession

Secondary succession occurs where an ecosystem has previously existed. Occurs on ecosystems that have been disturbed or disturbed by humans, animals, or by nature such as storms floods earthquakes and volcanoes. secondary succession is incredibly fast compared to primary succession. Soil is already there with nutrients. Seeds are already there. seeds of earlier occupants and windblown seeds of a pioneer species will germinate. Germinate means to grow the seeds will grow. Examples of secondary: Natural disturbances like fires hurricanes and tornadoes. Human disturbances like a pastor abandoned by a farmer, logging, or mining

Key idea

Secondary succession usually requires less time to form a climax community since soil is already in place

How the primary and secondary succession help maintain equilibrium in an ecosystem

The combination of plants, animals and organisms that return during succession use the available resources efficiently . Diversity and balance our maintain because as a biotic factors die, they provide nutrients for a continuing community.
