What should you consider when using WeBWorK?

Both your online homework and mastery assessments will be submitted through the WeBWorK system. Like any computerized system, it requires that you be careful and precise with the notation you use in your answers. Here are some tips: - Don't submit partial answers. You have six (6) submissions per problem. - WeBWorK understands basic operations and functions, so you usually won't need to "reduce" your answer - You may be asked to enter your answer in exact form, which means it should not be a rounded decimal. - Calculators are not allowed on the mastery assessments. - Use the Preview My Answers button! It displays your answer the way the system will understand it, and can often alert you - Use the same names of functions and variables as the problem. - Be sure to follow any instructions you're given about formatting. - Parentheses are important, and you'll want to be particularly careful about using them as needed, and making sure to put them in the correct place. - There will be buttons on the right of your window that allow you to enter common math notation, including fractions, square roots, exponents, and more. - However, we highly recommend entering your answer using only exponents rather than using radicals. - In general, make sure you include parentheses carefully! - If you are stuck on a problem and want to ask your instructor, use the Email Instructor button! The system will send your instructor a direct link to the version of the problem you have been assigned, and include a message from you - Note that prepwork assignments are due 30 minutes before class, and that late submissions can't be accepted. Answers become available as soon as the assignments are due. (Talk to your instructor about their policy if they assigned prepwork not in the WeBWorK system.) - The web homework assignments close at 11:59pm (not midnight!) and late submissions can't be accepted. Answers to these assignments, and often full written solutions, become available at 8am the morning after the due date, so you can review the solution to any problems you had remaining questions about.

Grades in Math 115 are determined by the midterm exams, the learning component, and the mastery assessments. Step 1: NCS - Each of the exam scores in this calculation is the number of points you earned on that exam. - The three exams are out of 60, 80, and 100 points respectively. - Your Learning Component Credit is the credit you earn on the Learning Component, which is 15% of your grade overall. - Your Mastery Credit is earned according to the details of that assessment. Step 2: Letter Grade - Then your NCS will be rounded and converted to a letter grade. - A guaranteed minimum scale for this conversion will be posted and updated here as the semester progresses.

Make-up exams for the midterms will be held Thursday, October 12 (Exam 1) and Thursday, November 16 (Exam 2) from 8-10pm; a make-up final exam will be held in January.

What consists of a course structure for Math 115?

You should expect this course to be different from other math courses you have taken. - Conceptual understanding. We want students to learn not only how to "get the right answer", but also how to choose an appropriate approach - Collaboration. You'll be expected to work with classmates during class and on homework. Working in groups gives you the opportunity to share ideas and see different approaches. - Interpretations. You'll be asked to think about mathematical topics in a variety of real-world contexts, to explain what the math means in that context - Multiple representations. When you hear the word "function", you likely think of a symbolic representation, like f(x)=5x-2. In these courses, we'll also be representing functions graphically, numerically (with tables of data), and verbally. - Explanations. As you are solving problems in this course, remember that "getting the answer" is only one of the steps. You'll be asked to explain your mathematical ideas, both verbally and in writing. - Problem solving. Figuring out how to approach a problem is an important part of the problem-solving process, and not all problems can be solved in only one way or with just a few minutes of thought.
