Team Sports - Volleyball
Basic Violations
-steeping over the line on a serve -failure to serve the ball over the net successfully -hitting the ball illegally (carrying, palming ,throwing, etc...) -touching the net while the ball is in play -reaching over the net -reaches under the net (if interferes with ball or opposing player) -failure to serve in the correct order -blacks/spikes from a position not behind the 10 ft line while in a back row position
Outside hitter - position
Attacker who spikes the ball over the net from the front left position. Also blocks spikes from the other team.
Middle blocker - position
Defensive specialist who assists the other two front-row players in blocking all shots from the opposing team. Also spikes ball from the middle of the court.
Setter - position
Passing specialist who usually hits the second ball of the rally to set up a spike for a teammate. The setter is always close to the net, faces the left sideline, and can set the ball forward or backward to the hitter that is ready to attack.
Tap, Tip, or Dink
a player disguises a spike and strategically places the ball in a "hole"
Dig
a player makes a save from a very difficult spike
Ace
ball is served to the other team, no one touches it
Roof
when a player jumps above the height of the net, blocks the ball, and the ball goes back at the person who attacked (spiked) the ball
Kill
when a team spikes the ball and it either ends in a point of a sideout
Sideout
when the team that served the ball makes a mistake, causing the ball to go to the other team
