Test Four
Null Hypothesis (H0)
-a statistical hypothesis that contains a statement of equality such as ≤, ≥, or = -a statistical hypothesis that is tested for possible rejection under the assumption that it is true
What are the two types of hypotheses used in a hypothesis test?
-null and alternative The null hypothesis H0 is a statistical hypothesis that contains a statement of equality, such as less than or equals≤, equals=, or greater than or equals≥. The alternative hypothesis Ha is the complement of the null hypothesis. It is a statement that must be true if H0 is false and it contains a statement of strict inequality, such as greater than>, not equals≠, or less than<.
is the test right-tailed, left-tailed, or two-tailed?
If the alternative hypothesis contains the not-equal-to inequality symbol, then it is a two-tailed test. If the alternative hypothesis contains the less-than inequality symbol, then it is a left-tailed test. If the alternative hypothesis contains the greater-than inequality symbol, then it is a right-tailed test.
statistical hypothesis
a statement about a population parameter
hypothesis test
a statistical method that uses sample data to evaluate a hypothesis about a population (population parameter)
What are two decisions you can make from performing a hypothesis test?
reject the null hypothesis or fail to reject the null hypothesis
How are they related?
the alternative hypothesis is the complement of the null hypothesis
