Descriptive

A hedgehog is between 5 to 12 inches long and weighs up to 40 ounces, which is less than three pounds. Its upper body is covered with sharp spines, which it uses to protect itself from predators. The underside is soft and furry.

Compare & Contrast

China and India are two highly-populated, large nations in Asia. The total area of China is 9.60 million square km, while that of India is 3.29 square km. Their populations are similar; there are 1.3 billion people living in China and 1.1 billion in India. The life expectancy in China (74 years of age) is higher than that of India (64 years of age). People living in China tend to be better off financially as well. About 10% of Chinese citizens live in poverty, compared to 25% of Indians.

Sequential/Procedural

Planning a vacation can be a lot of fun. The first thing most people do is decide when they'd like to take their vacation. Knowing the specific dates makes it easier to decide where to go. Next, determine what kind of vacation you would most enjoy. Some people like theme park vacations, while others prefer quiet beach getaways. Finally, make the necessary travel arrangements.

Cause & Effect

Studying a second language during your school years is important. Learning a second language can help students gain a better understanding of the English language. Since many of our English words have origins in other languages, studying a second language can increase one's English vocabulary.

Problem & Solution

When students move to a new community and a new school, it can be difficult for them to make friends—especially if they move in the middle of the year. Wilson Middle School has developed a Community Club that reaches out to new students for their first year at school. The Community Club invites new students to events where they can meet other students outside of the classroom. The club also provides every new student with a "buddy" who helps the student navigate the school.
