compare and contrast the structure of the three types of blood vessels.

Arteries carry blood away from the heart while veins do the opposite and carry blood to the heart. Capillaries connect both the veins and the arteries. pg. 550

Explain the pathway of blood through the heart.

First the blood returning from the body enters the right atrium through the superior and inferior vena cavae. Then the right atrium contracts forcing the blood into the right ventricle when the right ventricle contracts the blood leaves the heart and goes to the pulmonary artery to the lungs. The pulmonary arteries are the only arteries that carry the blood that is high in carbon dioxide. You have then the oxygen rich blood travels from the lungs to the pulmonary vein and into the left atrium the pulmonary veins are the only veins that carry oxygen rich blood. Finally the left The left atrium contracts and forces the blood into the left ventricle. the left ventricle contracts forcing the blood out of the heart and into the aorta. pg. 548

contrast pulmonary and sytemic circulation. Identify which vessels carry oxygen-rich blood.

Pulmonary circulation is when the flow of blood through the heart to lungs and back to the heart. Systemic circulation is oxygen rich blood moves to all of your organs and body tissues except the heart and lungs. Arteries carry oxygen rich blood vessels. Pg. 548+549+550

vein

The blood vessels that carry blood back to the heart. pg. 550. The flow of blood in your veins is also helpd by your skelatal system.

atrium

The two upper chambers in the heart. pg. 547 During one heartbeat, both atriums contract at one time.

artery

blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart. pg. 550. They have thick elastic walls made from connective tissue and smooth muscle tissue.

capillary

microscopic blood vessels that connect arteries and veins. pg. 551. You can see capillaries when you have bloodshot eyes.

systemic circulation

oxygen rich blood moves to all of your organs and body tissues except the heart and lungs. pg. 549. This is the largest of the three sections of your circulatory system.

pulmanary circulation

the flow of blood through the heart to the lungs and back to the heart. pg.548. In pulmonary circulation the blood coming back from the lungs contains waste.

coronary circulation

the flow of blood to and from the tissue of the heart. pg. 547. When it is blocked oxygen and nutrients cannot reach all the cells of the heart.

ventricle

the two lower chambers in the heart. pg. 547 During one heartbeat both ventricles contract at one time.
