Objective Summary
a summary free from opinions or bias.
Inference
an idea or conclusion that is drawn from evidence and reasoning. (To make an educated guess.)
Close Reading
analysis of a text through intense, focused reading and rereading
Text Evidence
any evidence from a fiction or nonfiction text that can be used to support ideas, arguments, opinions, and thoughts.
Thematic Analysis
identifying, analyzing and interpreting themes in literature
Central Idea
the message or lesson that the author wants the reader to take away from the text. Specific to the text. (Non-Fiction)
Theme
the moral, message or lesson that the author wants the reader to take away from the text. (Fiction)
Analysis
to describe, interpret and understand texts. (to connect the text to a broader social, political, cultural, or artistic context.)
Annotation
underlining or highlighting key words and phrases—anything that strikes you as surprising or significant, or that raises questions—as well as making notes in the margins.
