What is the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA)?
signed in 1992, is a trade treaty between the United States, Canada, and Mexico to lower and eliminate tariffs among the three countries. While many manufacturing jobs were lost, the agreement benefited Texas by accelerating diversification of the economy, stimulating jobs in trade and transport along the border, and increasing Texas's exports to both Canada and Mexico. There is controversy surrounding NAFTA in regard to immigration and terrorism, with some critics calling for stricter policies on border control and trade. NAFTA was replaced by a new trade agreement among the United States, Mexico, and Canada (USMCA) in the fall of 2018. Changes included provisions to protect American workers in the car industry from low wages, increased intellectual property protections, and an opening up of the Canadian milk market.
