Rational

(of a number, quantity, or expression) expressible, or containing quantities that are expressible, as a ratio of whole numbers. When expressed as a decimal, a rational number has a finite or recurring expansion.

Base

A bottom of a 3-d figure

Volume

A measure of the size of a body or region in three-dimensional space

Scientific notation

A method of writing or displaying numbers in terms of a decimal number between 1 and 10 multiplied by a power of 10.

Coefficient

A number multiplied by a variable in an algebraic expression.

Power

A power is the product of multiplying a number by itself. Usually, a power is represented with a base number and an exponent. The base number tells what number is being multiplied. The exponent, a small number written above and to the right of the base number, tells how many times the base number is being multiplied.

Unit rate

A rate in which the second quantity in the comparison is one unit

Radius

A straight line from the center to the circumference of a circle or sphere.

Diameter

A straight line passing from side to side through the center of a circle or sphere.

Expanded form

A way to write numbers by showing the value of each digit

Cube root

Example Cube Roots: The 3rd root of 64, or 64 radical 3, or the cube root of 64 is written as 3√ 64 = 4. The 3rd root of -64, or -64 radical 3, or the cube root of -64 is written as 3√-64 = -4.

Exponent

Exponents are a shorthand way to show how many times a number, called the base, is multiplied times itself. A number with an exponent is said to be "raised to the power" of that exponent. Move your mouse over the numbers below to learn more. Any number raised to the zero power (except 0) equals 1.

Standard form

The "Standard Form" for writing down a polynomial is to put the terms with the highest degree first (like the "2" in x2 if there is one variable).

Height

The measurement associated with an object's top-to-bottom dimension.

Slope

The ratio of the rise and the run between any two points in a line

Base

Usually, a power is represented with a base number and an exponent. The base number tells what number is being multiplied. The exponent, a small number written above and to the right of the base number, tells how many times the base number is being multiplied.

Initial value

When declaring a variable, it is not required but is good programming practice to also provide a(n) _____ _____.

Linear function

a function in which the graph of the solutions forms a line

Square root

a number that produces a specified quantity when multiplied by itself. "7 is a square root of 49"

Power of 10

a value represented by multiplying itself a certain number of times.10'by

Irrational

of a number, quantity, or expression) not expressible as a ratio of two integers, and having an infinite and nonrecurring expansion when expressed as a decimal. Examples of irrational numbers are the number π and the square root of 2.

Interger

positive and negative numbers that are whole. Includes zero

Rate of change

the relationship between two quantities that are changing. The rate of change is also called slope. rate of change=change in the dependent variable/change in the independent variable.
