Calvin Coolidge (POL)

Calvin Coolidge was president of the United States from 1923 to 1929. Coolidge was known for his quiet demeanor, which earned him the nickname "Silent Cal". He cleaned up the rampant corruption of the "Harding" administration and provided a model of stability and respectability for the American people in an era of fast-paced modernization.

Consumerism: Autos, Radios, Movies (CUL)

Consumerism concentration on producing and distributing goods for a market which must constantly be enlarged; goods like radios and movie contributed greatly to the culture of Americans. Poor people would crowd into theaters or around a radio to hear and see the movies and shows people created for a small price. People would spend the whole day entertained for a small fee.

Jazz Age (GEO)

During the 1920s, Jazz music and different dancing styles became such a huge thing. During the Great Depression people did anything to get their mind off of what was happening in the United States. Music and dancing was, of course, a great part of easing their minds but people also dressed differently and even acted a bit more crazy than before. .

Disarmament/Washington Conference/ Kellogg-Briand Treaty (WOR)

During the Washington conference in 1921, Hardings achieves the idea disarmament in order to create peace. Functionalism (CUL)

During this time architecture and technology became one and create a new professions and designer. Many would build skyscrapers and create functional products like toasters. Also, the design on the buildings are very modern and influenced by Art Deco. This creativity and new look to the city began the Harlem Renaissance.

First New Deal/Relief/Recovery/Reform/Hundred Days/ Bank Holiday (POL)

Franklin D. Roosevelt's comes up with a plan to help people at the bottom of the economic pyramid./ The New Deal included the three R's: immediate help people out of work, longer term assistance for business and the economy, and changes of American economic institutions to prevent another depression from occurring./ On March 4, 1933, Franklin Roosevelt started his term and called Congress into a one hundred day session. They passed into law all of Roosevelt's legislation./ President Franklin Roosevelt ordered the banks to be closed on March 6, 1933. He made a radio address explaining that the banks would be reopened after allowing enough time for the government to reorganize them on a sound basis.

Harlem Renaissance (NAT,MIG,CUL)

In 1890, white supremacy was restored in the south, this is also where 90% of African Americans lived at this time. As blacks relocated to Urban areas in the North, lots of them discovered that they all shared pretty much the same circumstances, past and present. This turned into a time where blacks restored their culture and were finally prideful of who they were.

Henry Ford/Assembly Line (WXT)

In 1914, Henry Ford had perfected a system for manufacturing automobiles by means of an assembly line. Instead of losing time moving around a factory as in the past./ Ford's workers remained at one place all day and performed the same simple operation over and over again at rapid speed.

Supreme Court/Reorganization Plan (POL)

In the 1930s, this organization was controlled by Republicans who opposed the New Deal. In 1935, they declared two of President Roosevelt's recovery programs unconstitutional./ President Franklin Roosevelt proposed a plan that allowed the president to appoint a new Supreme Court justice for each current justice over the age of 70. Congress refused to pass this legislation. AKA Roosevelt's "court packing plan" as it would have allowed Roosevelt to appoint new Democratic justices.

Modernism/Fundementalism/Revivalists/Scopes Trial (CUL/POL)

Modernism was a cultural movement during the early 1900's- people went against traditional ideals, promoted technology and the forms of expression that were different and unique to the current culture. Fundamentalism in response to a stray from traditional values. Revivalists preached fundamentalist ideals for religious revival via radio ( and new form of widespread communication). The Scopes Trial is known as the "Monkey Trial" because a teacher, Scopes, taught evolution rather than the bible (God created man story). He went to court and was fined $100.

Open Shop/Welfare Capitalism (WXT)

Open shop is the idea of keeping jobs open to non-union workers. In the 1920s wages were also rising but the union movement begin to feel and violent and unsuccessful strikes begin to occur. There for companies began practicing welfare capitalism which is voluntarily offering employees benefits and higher wages in order to reduce more unions organizing strikes. Obviously this wasn't benefiting the labor unions therefore many left which was the companies hopes.

Lost Generation (CUL)

Referred to the leading writers of the postwar decade with "hypocritical" religion specifically to ex-patriot writers who left the United States to take part in the literary culture of cities such as Paris and London during the 1920s. This group, including Stein, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ezra Pound, and T. S. Eliot, was skeptical about out-moded traditional forms of literary and artistic work, but optimistic about the potential of new forms. Its members were prolific writers and many produced classics.

Huey Long (POL)

Share The Wealth was a movement begun in February 1934, during the Great Depression, by Huey Long, a governor and later United States Senator from Louisiana. Huey Long first proposed the plan in a national radio address, which is now referred to as the "Share Our Wealth Speech". He was a great orator who attracted many followers until his assassination. His ideals stuck, and many people fought for higher taxes for the wealthier.

Dust Bowl/Okies (WOR)

Southern region of the United States, suffered severe dust storms in the 1930s. High winds and dust swept across Texas all the way to Nebraska. People and livestock were killed and crops failed to grow. The Dust Bowl drove many farming families on a desperate search for work and better living conditions. Okies were farmers in the Southwest who migrated to the Pacific Coast during the Great Depression. Most were drawn to California with the thought of land with greater opportunity and the chance to own a small plot of fertile soil drove them to move on the West Coast.

Ku Klux Klan (CUL,POL,NAT)

Spread to Midwest and North along with the South, hostility against blacks, Catholics, Jews, foreigners, and suspected Communists, support of lower-middle-class white Protestants in small cities and towns, terrorizing and intimidating "un-American" people with tactics including hangman's noose, tar and feathers, whips, corruption and fraud started in the early 1920s led to the KKK's decline.

Bonus March (POL)

The Bonus March of 1932 was a protest by several WWI veterans who, in response to the quickly worsening economy, wanted their bonuses early that had been promised to them. 43,000 marchers—17,000 U.S. World War I veterans, their families, and affiliated groups— gathered in Washington, D.C. in the summer of 1932 to demand cash-payment redemption of their service certificates.

War Debts/Reparations/Dawes Plan (WOR)

The Dawes Plan was an attempt in 1924 to solve the World War 1 reparations that Germany had to pay. The Treaty Of Versailles ASAP requires Germany to pay $32 billion good marks in reparations to cover civilians damage caused during the war.

The Great Depression lasted from 1929 to 1939, and was the worst economic downturn in the history of the industrialized world. It began after the stock market crash of October 1929, which sent Wall Street into a panic and wiped out millions of investors. The Wall Street Crash of 1929 is known as Black Tuesday, the Great Crash, or the Stock Market Crash of 1929, and was the most devastating stock market crash in the history.

Immigration Quota Laws (POL)

The Immigration Act Of 1924 limited the number of immigrants allowed entry into the United States through a national origins quota. The quota provided immigration visas to two percent of the total number of people of each nationality in the United States as of the 1890 national census.

Indian Reorganization Act (POL)

The Indian Reorganization Act of June 18, 1934, or the Wheeler-Howard Act, was U.S. federal legislation that dealt with the status of Native Americans. It was the centerpiece of what has been often called the "Indian New Deal". At Collier's request, Congress created the Indian Emergency Conservation Program (IECP), a CCC-type project for the reservations which employed more than 85,000 Indians.

Fall was the first individual to be convicted of a crime committed while a presidential cabinet member.

The first major legislation that Roosevelt and Congress passed in the Second New Deal—in response to the critics—was the Works Progress Administration (WPA). Created in 1935, the WPA was an effort to appease the "Longites" who clamored for more direct assistance from the federal government.

This group of acts and administrations were called New Deal Programs. Each held significance to helping America get out of the Great Depression. For example, the Civilian Corporation Corps (CCC) put young men age 18-25 to work building roads, developing parks, planting trees, and helping in soul-erosion and flood-control projects; and the Public Works Administration (PWA) (Part of the (NIRA) National Industrial Recovery Act) Provided money to states to construct schools and other community buildings. The National Recovery Administration (NRA) set prices for many products and established standards. Their main objective was to promote recovery by interrupting the trends of wage cuts, falling prices, and layoffs. All of these helped the economy and balance of America.

This was the radio series that Roosevelt you just to talk to the American people on informal way. One of his talks was about the banks reopening and the safety of their money.
