America considered the mile radius. The mile radius explains how the city should have crowded buildings as well as been untouched so that the bomb can bring a severe effect. They also considered the weather. The weather should be a good condition where it won't affect the bomb and there should two more alternatives in a place to drop the bomb just in case the weather is bad in the primary location. The US also thought of the targets of the bomb which were soldiers and sailors and not women and children as women and children do not fight in the war and therefore have no right to be targeted. Describe and discuss the different approaches of achieving civil rights that were advocated by such individuals as Marin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, Stokely Carmichael, and Medgar Evers. Be sure to cite specific examples. Your response must be in the form of a properly constructed essay response.

Even after slavery was declared unconstitutional, the segregation between whites and blacks continued. The segregation continued through the Jim Crow Laws. These laws segregated public transportation, schools, cafeterias, bathrooms, and even water fountians. There was not much done about the laws since those who had political power, whites, were not affected. In order to show the problems to the public and poliitical eye, civil rights leaders from different backgrounds and different approaches revealed themselves. Some of these civil rights leaders were Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, and Stokely Carmichael. Although these 3 advocates were achieving for the same civil rights, all had different ways of approaching the subject. MLK, Martin Luther King Jr., approached the subject in a peaceful manner. Being inspired by influencers such as Gandhi, MLK believed that peaceful protests and speaches could help achieve equal civil rights for all races. MLK was the leader of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference which helped him produce equality groups for African-Americans. These groups used peaceful tactics and civil disobedience in order to achieve equal rights. He also hoped for white and blacks to be together and not separated. Although MLK believed in civil disobedience, other civil rights leaders did not. Malcolm X, another civil rights leader, was prepared to use violence in order to achieve civil rights. Malcolm X was a civil rights leader who promoted the use of violence in order to get civil rights. He believed that whites were not to be trusted as when he was younger, the Klu Klux Klan had burned down his house. He promoted that the African-Americans establish their own communities and even their own state without the help of white americans. He believed that, if necessary, blacks should be prepared to gith for self-defense. His violent tactics led to his assassination from rival black muslims. Despite his death, the black power movement from Stokely Carmichael kept some of Malcolm's violent tactics and plans. Stokely Carmichael was a civil rights leader who had promoted both non-violent and violent tactics. He promoted non-violence until he witnessed violence against peaceful protesters. He then decided to take the violent route and started the black panther party. He also promoted Black Power, a more forceful approach for African-Americans to take to achieve equal rights. Carmichael believed that it was important for blacks to feel pride before they could fight for their rights. The Black Panther party also evolved where neighborhoods would use weapons to fight for the cause. Carmichael used both tactics of MLK and Malcolm X but took Malcolm's a step further in the end. All three civil rights leaders took different approaches to achieving equal rights. Even though not all of their tactics and plans were correct or benefitial, all three leaders helped create a step foward towards racial equality.

Why is King hopeful about the prospects for equal rights for African-Americans despite his imprisonment and the injustices around him? Give specific examples and reasons he mentions to support your answer.

He believes that people cannot be oppressed forever. He believes that those who are oppressed will realize the rights they deserve and stand up for them. He tells people to get rid of their discontent so that way they can peacefully stand up for the rights that they should have.

If King admits that breaking laws in order to change them is "a legitimate concern," how does he still justify civil disobedience?

He justifies civil disobedience by talking about unjust and just laws. He believes that just laws are those that are moral and that a majority compels on a minority to follow and the minority follows. On the other hand, an unjust law is one that goes against moral cod and that a majority inflicts on a minority that does not help bind the two together.

Why does Dr. King say "It would be fatal for the nation to overlook the urgency of the moment."?

He says that because he does not want the nation to look at their rebellion for freedom as another problem. It is a fatal problem since it is for rights of people regardless of color, the rights that should not have been given as a choice but as a requirement.

Dr. King says "In the process of gaining our rightful place we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds." What does he mean by that statement? What does he caution against?

He says that do not be guilty of your actions, whether they are wrong or good. He cautions against not wanting to perform an action just because it may be wrong or lead to trouble becuase you must do everything you can to get your freedom.

Which of the following issues did President Carter hope to promote as a central theme of his foreign policy agenda.

Human Rights

How does King's appeal to "eternal and natural law" help him examine and judge human laws?

Human laws should be laws that uplift people. Laws such as only white men can vote or ones of segregation do not uplift people therefore making them unjust and not appeal to eternal and natural law. Human laws should also show harmony. Segregation laws help give a place of superiority and inferiority instead of a balance.

In both Westside Community School District v. Mergens and Mitchell v. Helms, the Supreme Court ruled that in those instances it was permissible to provide public resources to religious schools or religious clubs in public schools. Do you agree with the courts reasoning in those decisions? Explain why or why not.

I agree with the courts decisions because religion should not dictate whether a club is ran or if a school gets funding. Any kind of club that is open to anyone that is in safe practice should be allowed to be an official school club. Even if the club is religious, it can help any child feel in a space that is accepting to them. Religious schools should also get public resources since it is just a normal school but it just ties a religious aspect into it. Parents send their kids to these schools for most education, not fully religion.

Do you agree or disagree with President Ford's pardon of Richard M. Nixon? Be sure to cite specific details from any and all of the documents provided to you in this lesson to support your position.

I disagree with Ford's pardon of Nixon. Although the wait for the trail would possibly throw off the tranquility of the nation, but the new president can help restore the tranquility. The new president has a job of keeping its nation at peace when at all possible. Although there would be a year plus wait for the trial, the citizens would be happy that there was at least a trial. After Nixon's invading of the citizen's privacy and trying to cover up evidence that can be used against him, he should be tried. If any citizen with no political power did the exact same crime, they would be tried with a punishment. Although Nixon stepping down from presidency can be seen as enough of a punishment, it is not much of a punishment. It is like saying that a guilt of the accused in court is enough of a punishment and that they should not be tried. Nixon should have been on trial and his old possession of political power should not be a reason that he is not tried. Although he was president, he is not anymore and should be tried as any normal citizen.

Based on everything that you have read and viewed for this lesson and the posters you have examined, was it possible for someone living in the United States to have not felt the impact of World War II? Explain why or why not. Support your argument with specific examples.

It was not possible for someone in the United States to feel the impact of WW2. All the posters show how the army needed all of the help they can get which included allowing woman to help with the army. With the many people, there was shortages in food and fuel. In order to conserve these valuables, America had put these posters everywhere as well as had announcements on tv and the radio to conserve food and fuel. They even hosted a contest to find the person who could conserve the most metal scraps. In addition to shortages, with all of the men at war, there was a need for workers. Propaganda helped convince Americans to talk less and work more in order to help the army.

List two reasons for his defense of civil disobedience, and explain how King thought a law can be disobeyed without leading to anarchy

King believed that if a law was morally wrong, it does not mean it should be followed. He used the example of how during World War 2, it was illegal to comfort Jews but if you were a Jew, you would still do it. He also says that if a law ignores or segregates a certain community, especially if they are actually the minority, than it does not need to be followed. The right to vote in Alabama is unjust since blacks are the majority and do not get a voice.

Does King consider himself an "outsider" by staging a civil rights protest in Birmingham? List three reasons he gives in response to this criticism.

King does not consider himself an outsider in the situation. He believes that anyone who lives in the United States can not be considered an outsider. He also believes that since his staff and he were invited, he can not be considered an outsider to the situation. He believes that he can not be outside of the sitaution since the situation is in Alabama and he believes that he is compelled to help fix it.

Based on your reading of the speech, what are the main ideas or themes that Dr. King is addressing? Provide specific details from the speech.

King is addressing the ideas of fighting for your rights. He says "We can never be satisfied as long as the Negro is the victim of police brutality" which can inspire others to fight for their safety. "We can never be satisfied as long as our bodies, heavy with the fatigue of travel, cannot gain lodging in the motels of the highways and the hotels of the cities.", King wants blacks to stand up for their rights to be able to go into normal places such as hotels and stores without being discriminated. He wants them to fight in order to accomplish his dreams of children of any color being able to play together and have each others back. He wants former slaves and their former slave owners to be able to create a friendship and not an ownership.

Certian posters depict Japan thanking Americans when they waste food which makes Americans want to conserve since they do not want to help Japan. The posters also show that Americans should not badly talk about the army and instead, work more. With certian phrases that "Loose lips, sink ships", the posters direct Americans to get into the workforce so they can spend more time working than chatting.

In Reno v. American Civil Liberties Union, the court struck down an act of Congress that was intended to protect minors from being exposed to "obscene and indecent" material online. The court ruled that the act was worded to vaguely and could thus restrict the free speech rights of adults. Do you agree? Is "obsecene and indecent" too vague? Be sure to explain why you agree or disagree with the court's decision.

Obscene and Indecent is too vague because the definition can differ in different aspects. Obscene and indecent can relate to vulgar words which until a certian age, should not be shown to children. It can also relate to sexual manners and practices which should never be shown to a child (18 and under). The law should be described more in order to explain what certian aspects are considered obscene and indecent. It can help clarify what freedom of speech that adults have to minors online specifically so that way any obscene or indecent material can not be accidentally shown to a child due to lack of understanding.

The Red Scare was when after the cold war, Americans got scared that communists from the Soviet Union were already living inside America, ready to spread communism. HUAC and Jospeh McCarthy both were against communism and in order to prevent communism, they decided to expose Communists. HUAC raided houses and Joseph McCarthy publicly accused individuals of being communist. HUAC also put ten people affiliated with Hollywood in prison known as the Hollywood Ten. The government also passed the Taft Hartley Acts where union leaders had to declare that they were against the communist party.

Identify and explain at least two ways in which the federal government increased its control over the U.S. economy during World War II.

The United States increased its control over the economy through encouraging rationing food and oil and by encouraging minorities to work. With all of the men out at war, there was a shortage of food for all of them. In order to get more food, the government encouraged those at home to ration food, using propaganda that said that food shall not be wasted as all wastes can go to the troops. The government also held competitions to see who could collect the most metal scraps that the war could use. It also encouraged people to carpool or bike in order to use less gas. Another way that the government collected more materials for war was by allowing minorities to replace jobs. All of the men at war had to leave their jobs which left open holes. These holes were filled by the married women and by the African-Americans. They would work in factories and women received equal pay that the working man would get. Mexican-Americans started working in the fields in order to help supply food for those at war.

Summarize the main goals and aims of the United States in Europe following World War II. Use everything you have read and viewed about events in post-war Europe to help you formulate your response.Your response must consist of at least five (5) to seven (7) complete sentences.

The United States wanted to help Europe build up from ruins using the Truman Doctrine and the Marshall Plan. The Marshall Plan helped provide Europe financially with $17 billion dollars used to help financially aid and help reconstruct Europe after World War 2. The Truman Doctrine helped provide Greece and Turkey with financial and military support as America was afraid that communism may spread to both countries. The United States also joined NATO as a way of helping Europe. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization was an organization of 26 countries that signed a treaty that if one country was attacked, all of the other countries that were apart of NATO would provide military aid.

Explain how the Korean War was a successful example of the United States' policy of containment.Your response must consist of at least five (5) to seven (7) complete sentences.

The reason why the United States joined South Korea was to confine communism. America was scared that if they did not join, the Soviet Union would conquer more land and create more communism. Even though they created an armistice with North Korea by trucing, they knew that a war would not do any good but bring more havoc to the situation. The Soviet Union would continue with their communist aggression on Europe. The United States still used MacArthur to help their millitary as at the begining of the war, South Korea was getting beat by a large margian. The armistice did help the United States complete their goal as South Korea did not become communist and the Soviet Union did not gain control of South Korea.

Based on your reading of the Articles of Impeachment, what do you think was the worst crime alleged to have been committed by President Nixon? Why?

The worst crime that President Nixon had allegedly committed was the invasion of the rights of citizens. As President, the job is to be there and make lives better from America and her citizens. In order to do this, one must keep their rights protected as the government should not dictate over the citizens but help guide the citizens to a better life. The invasion of privacy through electronic surveillance and the tax investigation invaded the citizens privacy. Although the government is apart of our lives through the laws, they should not invade our lives on a private level. Invading on the rights and privacy of citizens destroys the rights of the citizens as it shows that the government wants full control of the citizens and that the citizens should not have any protected rights at all.
