Why did the Crittenden Compromise not work?

- Lincoln said it would lose everything gained by the election - point was to save the union - paid back slaveholders money for their slaves that never came back - called civil war the war of Northern Aggression (FLASE the south fired the first shot)

- democrat - government support slavery - pledge the protection of slavery in the south and the territories

- republican - WON THE ELECTION - slavery must not be allowed in the territories - did not campaign to get rid of slavery

What happened in the immediate aftermath of the 1860 election?

- the union collapsed - the southern states left the union - later 6 other states left the union - the states that left believed it was necessary to protect property and it was a way of life - the south despised the Republican party - Abraham Lincoln wasn't even on the ballot in the southern states - south carolina was the first to leave the union

Why was Fort Sumter important to the South?

- when they seceded they seized their federal forts and arsenals (when they left the union, their forts and arsenals were up for grabs to be taken by the north) - Fort Sumter guarded the harbor in Charleston
