Read the following selection about indoor air pollution, a significant environmental problem. As you read, create one or more pictures in your mind about the information presented. The picture(s) you create should be rich in detail to help you remember the important information about this environmental problem. Indoor Air Pollution Indoor air pollution is an increasing environmental problem in today's technological world. There are three major reasons why pollution has become an increased problem. First, the escalating numbers and types of products and equipment used indoors in homes, factories, and offices give off fumes that may be dangerous. A second reason is that modern buildings are so well insulated that pollutants are trapped inside. These trapped pollutants often build to dangerous levels. Finally, people spend 90 percent of their time indoors. The people who spend the most time indoors are young children, old people, pregnant women, and people who are ill. These are the very people who are most likely to be harmed by pollutants. It is amazing to learn how many commonly used things produce indoor air pollution. Some commonly used things that produce pollution are: no-iron sheets and pillowcases, automobiles, by-products of foods cooked on the stove or in the oven, furnaces and heaters, glues and other hobby materials, air fresheners, and aerosol sprays. Of course smoking is another major source of air pollution. Smoking bans in many public places have helped reduce air pollution, but millions of people continue to smoke in their homes. Use the picture(s) you created in your mind to help answer the following question. DO NOT LOOK BACK AT THE READING SELECTION WHILE ANSWERING THE QUESTION.
