Vocabulary- Math III Unit 1 Functions
End Behavior
The behavior of the graph of f(x) as x approaches positive infinity or negative infinity. The degree and the leading coefficient of a polynomial function determine the behavior.
Absolute Value
The distance of a point or number from the origin (zero point) of a number line or coordinate system.
Increasing/decreasing interval
The domain of a function where its value is getting larger or smaller, respectively.
Inverse
The operation that reverses the effect of another operation
Range
The set of all output values of a function.
Domain
The set of all possible x-values which will make the function "work", and will output real y-values.
Relation
A collection of ordered pairs containing one object from each set.
System of Equations
A collection of two or more equations with a same set of unknowns. We try to find values for each of the unknowns that will satisfy every equation in the system.
Piecewise Function
A function whose domain is divided into parts and each part is defined by a different function rule.
Function
A relation from a set of inputs to a set of possible outputs where each input is related to exactly one output.
Evaluate
When you substitute a number for each variable and perform the arithmetic operations.
X-Intercept
Where the graph crosses the x-axis, and y value equals zero
Y-Intercept
Where the graph crosses the y-axis and the x value equals zero
