What is the internet?

A combination of the World Wide Web, which is a computer system that links together different documents into a database. This database is stored in computers everywhere and is used by millions of people around the world. The internet protocols of the World Wide Web have many uses, such as formatting browsers, locating other webpages, and allowing communication between devices. The most common types of web programming languages are HTML, Java Script, CSS, C++, and Java. Some of their uses are to help with the structure and layout of websites, animations, and presentation. Instant messaging is a real-time, text-based communication. It uses a shared software client among two or more people using personal computers, iPhones, and other devices. The protocols of Instant Messaging are IRC and XMPP. File Transfer Protocol is designed to transfer or exchange files from one computer to another, and is a convenient way to move, upload, download, delete, rename, and copy files. The File Transfer Protocols are FTP, FTPS, and SFTP, and they help to ensure computers can transfer files securely. Email is a digital mechanism that exchanges messages through the internet platform. Some email protocols are POP3, SMTP, IMAP, and HTTP. They are used to receive, send, and access emails, and access mailboxes.

World Wide Web (WWW)

A computer system that links together different documents into a database. This database is stored in computers everywhere and is used by millions of people around the world. You can jump from one website to another connecting people and their ideas.

DNS server (Domain Name Server)

A database of IP addresses constantly updated by other servers. When you request an address (URL), the server looks up the URL and returns the IP address, or searches for the address from other servers.

LAN (Local Area Network)

A geographic network that covers a relatively small geographic area - no more than a mile distance between computers

FTPS

A number of ways that an FTP software can securely transfer files. It is widely known and used, and the communication methods can be read and understood by humans. It provides services for file transfers between servers, and has good authentication mechanisms.

IRC

A protocol, created in 1988, for instant messaging. There are many client programs and many networks to connect to, and most of the chat happens in channels (chat rooms), while private messages are also possible. The nice thing about IRC is that most servers are non-commercial and requires very little traffic.

Instant Messaging

A real-time, text-based communication. Uses a shared software client among two or more people using personal computers, iPhones or other devices. The communication is done over a network, often the Internet, and may include advanced modes with live voice or video. Online chat allows communication in a multiuser environment among anonymous user. The software relies on a central server or servers to monitor presence. Some examples is Messenger, WhatsApp, Snapchat, and Instagram Direct Messaging.

what is a network

A serious of devices or severs that are connected. All networks fall under the umbrella of a WAN (Wide Area Network). The different networks are connected in various ways to each other through a LAN. Servers are connected through LAN. When you search up a website, a Web sever finds the code for the website you have searched up. Then, a DNS server locates the website and translates the code into readable text or anything else that is on the website, as well as delivering the website to the user through a LAN or WAN.

HTML (Hypertext Markup Language)

All hypertext pages on the web is written with this. It is a simple markup language that describes hypertext pages. Its format makes individual browsers capable of formatting text in the best way for the environment in which the website is viewed, like on a MAC or a PC.

File Transfer Protocol

It is a client/server protocol used for transferring or exchanging files from one computer to another. It is an essential tool for building websites, however, a lot of internet users will never use it. Using this can upload, download, delete, rename, move, and copy files on the server.

IMAP

It is a standard client/server protocol that is used to access emails . The emails are received and held by the internet server. Requires you to be connected to the internet constantly, but it can work with low internet connection since it only downloads email messages from the server when the user has requested to read a specific email.

TCP/IP

It is the language a computer uses to access the internet. It is made up of protocols to establish a network of networks so the host can access the internet.

ARP

It is the protocol used when a device tries to communicate with another device nearby to find the hardware address of a device from an IP address. The sending device sends ARP request message along with the IP address of the receiving device. All devices on that network see the message that was sent, but only the device that corresponds with the IP address that was sent responds with the ARP reply message.

SFTP (Secure File Transfer Protocol)

It provides file transfer and manipulation functionality, and works over any data stream that is reliable. It is an extension of the SSH protocol to provide file transfer capability.

HTTP - Hypertext Transfer Protocol

It uses a single round trip between the client and the server for a faster response time. First, a browser sends the request for a document to the server with an included description of the document being requested and a list of document types the browser can handle. The server responds by returning the document back to the browser in one of the acceptable formats of the browser. (It is an internet protocol)

3 most used types of programming languages

Java Script, CSS, HTML

How are LANs and WANs different?

LAN - local, in a smaller vicinity, not made by other connecting systems WAN - Connects Several LANs, not limited to one specific location

WAN (Wide Area Network)

Largest type of network in terms of geographic area; the Internet

3 main email protocols

POP3, SMTP, and IMAP

SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol)

The protocol for sending emails efficiently and reliably across the internet. It controls the exchange of email messages on email servers in the TCP/IP network. It is not used to receive emails, only send them.

URLs

They allow hypertext documents to point to other documents anywhere on the web. Consists of 3 major components:<protocol>://<node>/<location> First: specifies protocol used to access document. Second: specifies node on network from where document is going. Third: location of document on remote machine

HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol)

This protocol isn't used for email communications, but can be used for accessing your mailbox. It can also be used for composing or retrieving emails from an email account.

EAS

Used by servers like Microsoft Exchange. It syncs mail, contacts, calendars, notes, as well as everything else in outlook. Users of this protocol get the advantage of having synced applications over multiple devices rather than just one computer.

CSS

Used to describe the presentation of Web pages, including colors, layout, and fonts. It allows the adaption of websites to different types of devices like larger screens, smaller screens, or printers.

Java

Used to develop programs that run on Windows, Mac and Linux computers or may be integrated into websites. Some example of how it is used is to play online games, chat with people around the world, calculate your mortgage interest, and view images in 3D. Java.com states that, "It's also integral to the intranet applications and other e-business solutions that are the foundation of corporate computing.

POP3

Used to receive emails to a local email client from a remote server. Using this, you can download email messages on your computer and read them whether or not you are online.

Web Server

a computer that delivers requested web pages to your computer or mobile device.

Email

a digital mechanism that exchanges messages through the internet platform. These emails are transmitted between two servers, sender and recipient.

C++

a fast programming language that is used for graphic design. C++ helps in reducing the latency of websites. Websites that use digital image processing, and high-end graphical processing all use C++. Even popular games that are heavy on graphics use C++ as the primary programming language.

XMPP

a technology that is used to power various applications including instant messaging. It allows systems to talk to each other. There is a presence indicator that tells the server if you are offline, online, or busy. This is designed to send messages efficiently using a push mechanism.
