*Countries devoted all their resources to war efforts → *It started with Germany and Austria-Hungary along with Russia. But then the Ottoman Empire allied with Germany and Austria-Hungary. Then Germany sunk the Lusitania which then involved Britain, France, and the U.S. Then Italy and Bulgaria joined in hopes of gaining more new territory and power. Serbia was forced in when Germany and Austria-Hungary attacked them.

Why was the war welcomed as a positive event by the French, Germans and British?

*The french and british were apart of the triple alliance and germany then joined when it is was the central power, *British wanted to win the war because they didn't want one power ruling europe, *French were romanticizing war and having national glory and a quick victory, *They fought one another for economic, military and imperial advantage, *Germany and france were against each other after france's defensive treaty with russia, *Britain france and germany were all in war against each other, *It was positive for britain because they had more people joining the army and more patriotism, *It was positive for germany because they became a more popular army, *Germany won the franco prussion war against france they knew their army and supplies were more powerful than france because they had won before, *Alliances forced different countries into war

What did the Treaty of Versailles mean for Germany?

The compromise document that was created after WWI. Germany had to take full blame for the war in order for the treaty to pass, among other things. The US Senate rejected it. It caused issues in war, reparations, military, land and keeping the peace. The Treaty of Versailles meant German military should be gone and that Germany must reduce size of military for their national security. They also had to give up Alsace Lorraine to France, a coal mine to France. The compromise after WW1, settled land and freedom disputes. Germany had to take full blame for the war →lose a lot of their military and land→ Ruined germany's alliances

In Erich Maria Remarque's account, how did the soldiers in the trenches react to artillery bombardment?

The trench system was developed during World War 2. It was like a dugout and it provided cover for the soldiers and was always filled with gas for one enemies tried to pass over the would die. The main purpose was to kill enemies while protecting themselves and their country at the same time. Some went crazy because of the confident in the trenches. Some people were scared because trenches were called no mans land. Many of the soldiers faced shell shock, PTSD and more mental issues because of the artillery bombardment
