Irony

A figure of speech in which words convey the opposite of their literal meaning or a situation is contradictory to what one would expect.

Hyperbole

A figure of speech that uses exaggeration for emphasis.

Rhetorical questions

A question asked for effect rather than an actual answer.

Paradox

A statement that appears to contradict itself but can be true.

Personification

A type of metaphor in which nonliving or nonhuman things are given human characteristics or abilities.

Comparison of two different things that shows how they are the same.

Simile

Comparison of two different things that uses the words "like" or "as" to show how they are similar.

Dictionary definition.

Figurative

Language that alters the usual meanings of words. It uses an object that is familiar to describe something that may be unfamiliar. Examples include simile, metaphor, personification, etc.

Literal

Language that follows the actual or dictionary meaning.

Connotative

Language that includes words that have additional images or emotions associated with them.

Produce.

Allusion

Reference to something else, such as a work of literature or a religious document.

Catalyst

Something that causes a change or event.

Context

The parts of a text that come before or after a specific word or passage influencing the meaning of the word or passage.

Symbolism

Using an object or event to represent a larger idea.

Connotation

Words, ideas, or images or emotions associated with a word.
