What are the 3 levels of intellectual disability and their ranges?

Mild (2 SD away) 55-70 Moderate (3-4 SD away) 40-55 Severe 25-40

What are the main descriptions of each level?

Mild - correctable (preventable). Usually not due to genetics but due to poverty. Can live independently, can only finish up till 6th grade at age 18. Moderate - genetic based. Require assistance, can finish up until 2nd grade Severe - genetic based. can learn a few high-priority words, like "stop" and "hot". P

triarchic theory of intelligence

Robert Sternberg's theory that describes intelligence as having analytic, creative and practical dimensions

the Flynn effect

The rise in average IQ scores that has occurred over the decades in many nations, at a rate which is too fast to be attributed to genetic changes (more than 3 points per decade).

collective intelligence

a quality of group process (ie, effective communication) that is independent of the individual member's intelligences, that predicts a group's performance on an intelligence task.

self-concept

a sense of one's identity and personal worth. ie, for math, "I'm good at this" or "I'm not good at this." Has to do with you identity has a person; wheras self-efficacy is about "I can do it!"

incremental theory

a theory that a person's intelligence can grow as a function of experience

entity theory

a theory that a person's level of intelligence is fixed and unchangeable

splinter skills

abilities much higher than expected on the basis of one's general intelligence. ie: some people with IQ of 55 can do amazing things; like play a piece of music perfectly after listening to it only once.

verbal intelligence is more closely related to crystallized or fluid intelligence?

crystallized.

What is crystallized intelligence associated with?

faster communications along the axon pathways. example is high verbal intelligence; they seem to have faster communications.

What is fluid intelligence associated with?

high activity in the frontal lobe. if the frontal lobe is damaged, this affects fluid intelligence but not crystallized intelligence. fluid intelligence is highly correlated with working memory.

in nations where math and science performance is best, self-concept is

lowest. overconfidence in other nations, like european ones for example, can cause you to have poorer performance. s

which intelligences are correlated with IQ (general intelligence) scores?

mathematical, spatial and logistical skills are corelated with IQ, but not that of personality, motor and sensory skills.

fluid intelligence

one's ability to recognize patterns, to think logically without prior knowledge. contrasts with crystalilized intelligence. this tends to peak at young adulthood, decreasing with age.

crystallized intelligence

our accumulated knowledge and verbal skills; tends to increase with age.

IQ tests predict ______ but not __________

school performance; but not the intelligence that we have described earlier.

multiple intelligences

skills that tend to show low correlations with one another and with general intelligence. ie, there seems to be a separate intelligence needed for music as is for IQ. (some people with a very low IQ actually show extremely high musical intelligence).

Satisfactionist

someone who is okay with outcomes that are merely acceptable.

Maximist

someone who seeks for the best outcome, not necessarily the satisfactory outcome. (perfectionist)

intelligence is defined in 5 parts. what are they?

the ability of a person to... 1. adapt to a new environment 2. understand and execute multiple ways of reasoning 3. learn from their experiences 4. understand complex ideas 5. overcome obstacles (decision making)

measures of standard intelligence correlate with

the volume of the brain. specifically, the thickness of the cerebral cortex.
