The outer party is like the middle class/working class. This is who the Party focuses most of their

The owner of the secondhand store where Winston buys the diary, and paperweight. Winston rents a room above the shop
The Proles
The poorest rank of citizens. They live in the bad part of town. They are pretty much free from all the government oppression because the government doesn't see them as a threat.
Julia
The pretty co-worker that winston has an affair w/. She also rebels against the party by having affairs w Party members.
Emmanuel Goldstein
He is the supposed writer of a book that is the basis of the Brotherhood.
What's in Room 101
Room 101 holds a persons biggest fears. For Winton it was a dark room with caged rats.
Big Brother
Not actually a character but basically represents the government as a whole. The book emphasizes that big brother is always watching.
What are the Party's views on human sexuality and privacy? Why does it feel the way it does about these issues?
People have no privacy because privacy leads to individuality. They also aren't allowed to have sex except to create more party members. The party doesn't want the people to have joy for their own efforts. Instead all joy comes from the party.
The Ministry of Truth
The government agency where Winston works. Here they alter records to fit the Party's official version of the past.
The Inner Party
The inner party is equivalent to the upper class. They live lavish lives and have a lot to do with the party.

The land that used to be called England

Winston Smith
The main character of the story. Is a low-ranking worker for the outer party. Starts an illegal diary about how he hates the party. Loves Julia.
O'Brien
A man by whom Winston is intrigued. He is a member of the Inner Party and thus, he lives a glamorous life. Winston thinks he is also part of the Brotherhood, but he is part of the secret police.
Eurasia
According to the records Oceania has always been at war with Eurasia.
Eastasia
Also according to the records Oceania has always been in alliance with EastAsia
"War is Peace; Freedom is Slavery; Ignorance is Strength"
Doublethink allows citizens to believe these claims by the party. With the citizens agreement, the gov can then be in war, give no freedom, and keep the people ignorant because they believe this slogan.
The Two Minutes Hate
Everyday the people are required to gather and yell hate about the Party's enemies. This is how the people left off steam in support of the party.
In what ways does the Party resemble a religion?
It is very strict. All the history fits its needs. Religion is supposed to rule your life.
What does the Party want to accomplish? How does this relate to the ideology of Ingsoc?
It wants total control or all the people, and it further wants the people to be active worshipers of the party. Ingsoc is a totalitarian government that invades all privacy and forces the people to bow down to the party.
Doublethink
The ability to believe and disbelieve simultaneously. Citizen's believe everything the government says even though subconsciously they know it does not make sense.
Telescreens
They are similar to tv's. Each person has one in their home and it has to be on all day. This is how the gov watches it's citizens.
The Brotherhood
This is a somewhat secret group of people who oppose the Party.
What is the meaning of this statement: "Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two equals four. If that is granted, all else follows."
This is the government's thinking. If people were allowed to have individual thoughts (2 +2 =4) then they might rebel or be out of control.
Syme
Works on the revised Newspeak, very smart man. Winston eats lunch with him and thinks he is too smart and will one day be vaporized. He later vanishes
