How did the Nuremburg laws of 1935 affect the lives of Jews living in Germany? (9 marks)

Jews were banned from holding any positions of power in national or local government. The lives of German Jews were now heavily controlled by the Nazis. The Nuremburg race laws affected German Jews dramatically as many aspects of their lives were now heavily controlled by the Nazis and they had lost several key rights.

What were the Nuremberg Laws?

The Nuremberg laws, passed on 15 September 1935, denied Jews German citizenship, voting rights, the right to marry a German, or to retain Government office. The laws were worsened in 1938: medical and legal Jews were forbidden from serving Aryans, they had to surrender their possessions to to the government's mercy, and were labelled with the letter 'J' to symbolise their faith. Law for the Protection of German Blood and Honour which prohibited Jews from holding German citizenship and marrying non-Jews Reich Citizenship Law which made Jews 'subjects' rather than citizens - lost rights.

The Nuremburg race laws were passed in 1935 and dramatically removed the rights of Jews living in Germany. The Laws banned Jews from being citizens of Germany meaning they could not vote, although voting did not really matter after 1935. As Jews were not longer classed as German citizens they were no longer protected by German law or the police. Jews social freedoms were also dramatically affected as they were forbidden to marry non-Jews or to have sexual relations with Germans.
