Polyactic Acid (PLA)

A biodegradable, but brittle, plastic that's used as the build material or 'filament' in fused deposition modeling 3D printers.

Rapid Prototyping

Technology used to quickly fabricate a scale model of an object created using three-dimensional computer aided design (CAD) data and usually done by 3D printing or additive manufacturing technology.

Charles Hull

Who is recognized as the inventor of 3D printing?

Standard Tessellation Language (STL)

A file format that represents a 3D object by describing the surface as a series of triangles. The most popular file format for 3D printing.

Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM)

A 3D printing process that extrudes heated thermoplastic material through a computer-controlled print-head nozzle to build parts up layer by layer.

Extruder

A group of parts which handles feeding and extruding of the build material. Consists of two assemblies: a cold end to pull and feed the thermoplastic from the spool, and a hot end that melts and extrudes the thermoplastic.

Prototype

A near-final model or representation of a product, created during the design process to evaluate the form, fit and function of an object.

Brim

A series of outlines attached to a model that extend outward and are often used to stabilize small parts of a model, to help these areas stay connected to the print bed.

Filament

A thermoplastic base material that's used to 3D print objects by fusing material deposited layers together.

Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS)

An impact resistant, non-biodegradable plastic that's used as the build material or 'filament' in fused deposition modeling 3D printers.

Computer Aided Design (CAD)

Software that enables users to create models in either two or three dimensional formats.

Slicer

Software used to divide a 3D model into flat layers and generates the G-code instructions needed for a 3D printer to print an object.

Print Bed

The flat surface that a 3D printer lays material down on. They are often heated to prevent warping of the printed object.

G-code

The language used to instruct your 3D printer to perform the specific operations, such as controlling the path, speed, and temperature of the printer, to print a unique item.

Additive Manufacturing

The original name for 3D Printing. The technology that builds 3D objects by adding layer-upon-layer of material

Infill

The pattern inside an object and the value, or percentage, the object is filled by solid material.

ABS and PLA

What 2 types of filament will our 3D printer use?

Slic3r

What is the name of the software program we use in PTE to convert and object to G-code?

Pronterface

What is the name of the software we use in PTE to ready the 3D printer and translate the G-code so the printer can print an object?

STL

What type of file do we download a project from Tinkercad as?

Early 1980's

When was 3D printing first invented?
