Consequent Boundary

A boundary line that coincides with some cultural divide, such as religion or language.

superimposed boundary

A boundary that has been imposed on an area by an outside or conquering power.

Geometric Boundary

A boundary that is formed by arcs or straight lines irrespective of the physical and cultural features of the land it passes through.

Relict boundary

A boundary that is no longer observed but is still present. It no longer functions as a boundary, but is rather a part of the cultural landscape.

Subsequent Boundary

A political boundary established after the settlement of the area. These boundaries develop with the culture.

Antecedent Boundary

A political boundary that existed before the cultural landscape emerged and stayed in place while people moved in to occupy the surrounding area.

Political Boundaries

The dividing lines between countries, states, provinces, counties, and cities.
