6.G.1 Area of Regular and Irregular Polygons
Composite Figures
A figure that is made up of two or more shapes
square unit
A unit for measuring area
Area of a parallelogram
A= b x h A=base x height
Area of a triangle
A=1/2bh area = b x h/2
Area of a rectangle
A=lw
Area of a Square
A=s² , A= l x w
Area of Irregular Figures
Divide the figure into familiar shapes. Find the areas of each shape, them add them together!
two-dimensional
Having a base and height (length and width). Having area, but not volume. Also called a plane figure.
length
How long something is. The distance from one point to another. Length is measured in units such as inches, feet, centimeters, etc.
area
The measure, in square units, of the inside of a plane figure.
width
The measurement associated with an object's side-to-side dimension.
height
The measurement associated with an object's top-to-bottom dimension. Forming a perpendicular line.
decompose a shape
To decompose a shape, break it up to form other shapes.
quadrilateral
a four-sided polygon
regular polygon
a polygon with all sides and all angles equal
parallelogram
a quadrilateral with 2 sets of parallel lines opposite sides and angles of equal length.
rectangle
a quadrilateral with four right angles; opposite sides are equal and parallel
trapezoid
a quadrilateral with only 1 set of parallel lines
right triangle
a triangle with a right angle of 90 degrees
base of a parallelogram
side length that is perpendicular to the height.
perimeter
the distance around a polygon
