Stop and Reflect: Discrimination and Generalization
- For generalization, expose to examples that look different but are the same. - For discrimination, expose to examples that are similar in some ways, but different in the important way. -Ask your questions. - Don't resist/reject new information. - Use time with your instructor to get help identifying what is important
Acquisition
- Goal: increase accuracy to a specified level - Baseline skills assessment -Make first attempts successful - Reinforce trying in the beginning - As accuracy increases, shift to reinforcing correct responding rather than just effort - Build prompts to address reasons for errors
Fluency
- Once the skill has been learned, moving toward making it an automatic response. - Taught by massed practice speed trials. - Reinforce accurate responding within certain window of time. -Frequently targets foundational component skills. -Useful when previously learned responses interfere with accurate responding in context. - Begins in isolation, moves toward functional use.
Maintenance
- Skills learned to desired level of fluency are revisited at spaced intervals to ensure they remain intact when not constantly drilled. - Taught using same prompts and cues as in acquisition and fluency. - Measure accuracy and time. - Increase frequency of checks if not remaining at criterion.

Growing in the Profession

Discrimination and Generalization
- Expanding the skill to occur in different contexts or in response to similar but different stimuli. - Discrimination training ensures we do not overgeneralize. - May have to return to previous prompting and reinforcement when introducing the skill into new contexts.
Stop and Reflect: Fluency
- Fluency is not demonstrated with one stellar performance - If you maintain >90% accuracy in a pre-determined time frame for a specified skill you have attained fluency.
Stop and Reflect: Maintenance
- Practice the skill in isolation - Practice moving in and out of the skill - Ask for supervision and feedback when shifting between skills
Debriefing Questions
