Smart object
An image layer that stores image data from raster or vector images.
What is non-destructive editing?
It allows you to experiment without risk of damaging your original image. These types of edits can always be removed or changed, even after saving and re-opening the image
Dragging into an empty interface

To add vertical text...
Opt 1: rotate text 90 degrees. Opt 2: In Tools panel click and hold Type tool to display menu of hidden tools>select vertical type tool (down arrow T)>enter text
Saving as Raster image
Raster=all layers merged to one; full saved image quality, smaller file size, larger size than other files, only opened with photoshop, removes ability to edit individual layers
To use spot healing brush...
Spot Healing Brush>use left and right brackets to adjust the cursor>drag brush over element you want removed
To crop the image...
Tools panel>crop tool (square with line); drag handles; "commit" (check) to save.
To work with advanced character settings...
Type tool (T)>enter text>click Character and Paragraph Toggle button (file folder with bullets)>adjust settings
To use content-aware fill...
Use the lasso tool to select the area of the image to remove>Edit>fill>select Content-Aware from the contents menu>select color adaptation to help blend gradients>don't touch settings in blending area>OK
To create guides...
View>New Guide>click Horizontal or Vertical for the orientation in the Dialogue box>enter a value in the Position field to specify location of new guide
To soft proof a document...
View>Proof Setup>select Working CMYK>View>Proof colors
To display rulers...
View>Rulers (Command R)
To hide a style...
click visibility icon (eye) next to the layer style

Photography
Brings specific tools needed for photograph editing to the forefront.
To create a new panel group
Drag a panel tab and release the mouse button when horizontal blue line appears

Drag the group by it's title bar on the right where the tabs end

What is a guide?
A line/shape/something set a certain number away from the edge of the canvas (the distance is the Position value

Unsharp Mask Settings: Threshold
Adjusts how much sharpening is applied to the spaces between detected edges; higher numbers=sharpen less (between the edges)
JPEG
Allows for quality to be set based on size right for image.
Bridge
Allows you to browse, view, and manage Adobe docs without having to open them - makes it easier to view document's metadata

GIF
Best for logos, graphs and clip art images with few colors. Also used for short animations. Not great for higher quality
To save as PSD...
Choose File>Save As>select Photoshop>click location>Save
To align multiple text layers...
Choose move tool from tool panel (Mouse with directional +)>select layer, and control+select all other layers>select the alignment you want to use in the Move Options bar.
To create a layer mask...
Click layer you want to add mask to>click mask button (square with empty circle inside) in the Layers panel; the mask can be changed in size if part of the layer is selected, otherwise whole layer is mask
Fixing redeye
Click the redeye tool icon (an eye with a plus sign next to it) found under spot healing brush. Curser changes to crosshair. Place crosshair over center of pupil with redeye and click.

File>Export>Save for Web (Legacy); select desired format for image; adjust settings at the top of the Save for Web dialogue box to determine image quality - choose setting depending on image visually. Specify image size - enter values in W and H field or Percent field; save and select location to save your document.
To create a print document...
File>New>select U.S. Paper under Document Type menu>size can be changed>OK
To open RAW file...

To remove dust and scratches...
Filter>Noise>Dust&Scratches; set radius and threshold according to image; click ok to accept changes
To Sharpen via Unsharp Mask
Filter>Sharpen>Unsharp Mask; adjust the settings; select preview to compare sharper image to previous; adjust settings until image edges look crisp but smooth; click OK to accept

Helpful for developing text and logo designs; features options for perfecting character and paragraph settings
To convert an image to black and white...
Image>Adjustments>Black and White; click auto or browse options from preset menu.
To boost color in an image...
Image>Adjustments>Vibrance; adjust vibrance and saturation by dragging specific values
To automatically adjust White Balance...
Image>Auto Color (shift command B); use shift command Z to undo and compare the two images
To correct tone and color in aged photos...
Image>Auto Tone, if more needed, then Image>Auto Color
To expand the canvas on all sides...
Image>Canvas Size>in New Size area select Percent from Unit menus next to the Width and Height fields (110 would increase 10%=5% on each side of canvas)>make sure relative is deselected>center image in anchor grid>OK

To resize an image
Image>Image Size; enter desired dimensions in pixels for width and height; select Resample at bottom of Image Size dialogue box; select proper resampling method (ex: "bicubic sharper (reduction)" for shrinking)
To convert image to RGB...
Image>Mode>RGB Color - check title bar at top, it should say RGB./8 after the name; Next, paint a color onto a layer, paint with opaque color then lower opacity; Select layer you want to edit>select Color blending mode>drag opacity slider to desired transparency
Vector Image
Images is saved as coordinates and equations Much easier to edit Can resize without affecting quality Able to manipulate individual objects that make up the image
RAW files
Images that can be created only in a camera - contain unprocessed image data directly from camera's image sensor. Much larger in size but more useful and versatile
Painting
Intended to allow for creation of digital paintings; has color and brush settings handy
3D
Includes tools for working with 3D images
To add solid color fill layer...

When should you use CMYK soft proof?
Only when printing on an offset printer as most home and work printers prefer RGB - only use CMYK proofing if printing CMYK

PNG
Originally designed to replace GIFs. Open source format - includes indexed true colors, supports true alpha transparency, and is supported by most browsers. Best file type but JPEG creates smaller files.

Places image as a smart object and updates it as original image is updated

Places image on new smart layer in current saved state
Saving as PSD
Retains full power photoshop, most editable images, large file size, only opened with photoshop
To restore damaged photos...
Rotate: Image>Image rotation Straighten: Straighten on options bar (looks like sun on horizon); drag a line across the vertical or horizontal reference point you have chosen, release mouse button to straighten image and crop. Fix "muddy": Image>Adjustments>Levels, drag shadow, highlight, midtones etc to balance.

To fade the image using a Mask...
Select Gradient tool>click layer mask thumbnail to activate the mask>select black to white gradient in option bar>drag a gradient on your image to fade the image from visible to hidden>save work with Command+S
To shift colors...
Select layer you want to adjust>Image>adjustments>Hue/Saturation>check preview box>adjust to likeness>OK
To save created style...
Select layer you want to save>in the Styles panel, click the Create New Style button (paper with corner folded)>name style in the dialogue box>select Include Layer Effects and Add To My Current Library>OK
To create a layer style...
Select layer>select Add A Layer Style icon (fx) at bottom of Layers panel>choose style>specify aspects of style in dialogue box>OK
Metadata
Set of standard information about a file - name, resolution, time stamp, color space, copyright
Unsharp Mask Settings: Radius
Sets how wide the sharpening should extend past the edges; higher numbers=sharpen more (by increasing width of edges)

When should sharpening be used?
When making an image for the web, after resizing it.

To access Workspace menu presets
Window>Workspace or click the Workspace switcher button in top right corner of options bar (it will be labeled with current workspace)
To create custom Workspaces
Window>Workspace>New Workspace or select New Workspace from the Workplace switcher. Enter name for workspace. To save customizations, select the boxes for keyboard shortcuts or menus, click save. It will automatically update and save every change. Create your new workspace

Content-aware fill
allows you to remove selected object from an image and have photoshop automatically fill in the space
To edit a style...
double-click the style to edit the style settings
To rearrange panel in same group
drag the panel tab and release the mouse button when the panels display in desired order
To combine panel with another group
drag the panel's tab into another panel group and release mouse button when blue highlight bar appears.
To remove a style...
drag the style to the trash can in Layers panel or control click and select Clear Layer Style
To resize panels
move the mouse pointer between the dividers of the panels until you see a double headed arrow and then drag to resize.
Horizontal scaling
stretches the type in horizontal direction
Vertical scaling
stretches the type in vertical direction
