What is the point of annotating an article/text?

-Students look further into the text and evaluate the entire passage instead of just skimming through it. -You have highlighted and can look back on information you believe to be important. -You can further analyse the text and dig deeper into it. -You will have an overall better understanding of what you are reading.

Step #4 of annotating

HIGHLIGHT!! Highlighting text that may be important when answering questions will help you so much when going back and looking through your annotations. It will stand apart from the rest of the text so you can look back on it easier.

Step #3 of annotating

Identify key terms: -repeated words, phrases, etc. -definitions -words or phrases used to represent an idea. -central concepts and explanations of ideas. -words relevant to the authours purpose.

Step #6 of annotating

Making connections: -Use HMSCS (History, Movies and Books, Sports and Pop Culture, Current Events, Someone You Know.) These are all things you can make connections to.

Step #8 of annotating

Making internal connections: -Respond to the text as you read it. Write down your thoughts, and questions about the text. This will cause you to think more about what you're reading.

Step #7 of annotating

Making visual connections: -Draw pictures, graphs, whatever you can imagine the text looking like. This will help you understand the text on a more abstract level.

Marking words and phrases that stand apart from the text: -You can circle, underline, etc any words or phrases that may be inportant to the text.

Number the paragraphs: -This will help you keep your annotations more organised. -It can be used as a reference when looking back at different texts.

Predict the title: -Before you begin, read the title and make some predictions of the text based upon the title and/or headings.

Step #9 of annotating

Questioning the text: -As said in the last box, you should write down questions you have about the text. Try to answer those questions as you read more off the text and if they're still standing at the end of the text then try to think of what the answer may be.

Step #10 of annotating

Summarisation: -Once you finish reading the text, summarise it. Put it into your own words. -Include supporting details, and the main idea.
