Zulu Kingdom
A monarchy in Southern Africa that extended along the coast of the Indian Ocean from the Tugela River in the south to Pongola River in the north. Traded with the Portuguese and entered war with the British. Initially won but eventually the British defeated them.
Cherokee Nation
Adopted European ways because they believed they could keep their land if acted as white man. Had newspaper, charter. They were farmers and elite owned slaves. Developed an alphabet where 20% became literate (more than whites). Eventually forced to leave due to the Native American Removal Act.
Independent States in the Balkans
Balkan nation-states emerged during the 19th and early 20th centuries as they gained independence from the Ottoman Empire or the Austro-Hungarian empire. Four Balkan states defeated the Ottoman Empire in the First Balkan War. While participating in this war, Bulgaria did not gain independence until much later. Greece in 1821, Serbia, and Montenegro in 1878, Romania in 1881 were the first four Balkan states to gain their independence. Unlike the other three, Romania got its independence from the Russo-Turkish War.
Settler Colonies
Colonies in which the colonizing people settled in large numbers, rather than simply spending relatively small numbers to exploit the region; particularly noteworthy in the case of the British colonies in North America. Enabled the settlers to overthrow their controlling leaders and become independent.
Henry Morton Stanley
Employed by King Leopold II to control the Belgian Congo. Used the Force Publique to enforce his horrible reign over the people of the Congo and hold them as slaves doing the work for Belgium extracting rubber from trees.
1857 India Rebllion
Indian Hindu and Muslim soldiers were forced to use weapons that utilized grease containing both cow and pig fats. As this was against Hindu and Muslim religion, they rebelled against their British administrators and failed.
Eugenics
Science dealing with improving hereditary qualities. Outcast those with unfavorable traits. Generally white people would have the upper hand in Eugenics even compared to a normal colored person.
Social Darwinism
The application of ideas about evolution and "survival of the fittest" to human societies - particularly as a justification for their imperialist expansion. "Justified" Racism.
White Man's Burden
idea that many European countries had a duty to spread their religion and culture to the less civilized (brown) people. Commonly believed by white men that anyone who wasn't white is lesser and needs the help of the white man to become more advanced. Portrayed as a responsibility or obligation.
Force Publique
the armed force in the Congo under Leopold II's rule; made up of white Belgian officers and African soldiers with the goal of terrorizing local people to establish control and enforce coerced labor.
John Bull
A figure who stands for England in political satire and political cartoons. He is a stout, feisty man, often shown in a suit made out of the British flag. British equivalent of Uncle Sam. Sometimes depicted to show Britain's hold on other countries.
