Incorrect Sentences

What to do if you reference the exact same source within the same paragraph

1. All parenthetical citations should include the year, regardless of how often they appear in a paragraph. 2. When the name of the author is part of the narrative and appears outside of parentheses, after the first citation in each paragraph you need not include the year in subsequent nonparenthetical citations as long as the study cannot be confused with other studies in the article.

Reference List: Citing a Book

Basic Format: Author. (Year). Title of Book. Editor. Place of Publication: Publisher. Example: Plath, S. (2000). The unabridged journals. K. V. Kukil (Ed.). New York, NY: Anchor. Note: The editor's name is written with the initials first followed by the last name and (Ed.).

In-Text Citations: Short Quotations Cont.

Work with two authors Name both authors in the signal phrase or the parentheses each time you cite the work. In the parentheses, use "&" between the authors' names; in the signal phrase, use "and." If there is more than one page that needs to be cited, use the format, pp. in the parentheses. If there is only one page, use p. in parenthesis. For multiple articles by the same author, or authors listed in the same order, list the entries in chronological order, from earliest to most recent. Present the journal title in full. Maintain the punctuation and capitalization that is used by the journal in its title. In-Text Citations: Short Quotations

If you are directly quoting from a work, you will need to include the author, year of publication, and the page number for the reference (preceded by "p."). Introduce the quotation with a signal phrase that includes the author's last name followed by the date of publication in parentheses. Short quotations are 39 words or less. According to Jones (1998), "Students often had difficulty using APA style, especially when it was their first time" (p. 199).
