Louis Sullivan

Sullivan influences later designers through his writings as well as his buildings. Sullivan's belief in nature as the source of law influences Frank Lloyd Wright, who works in his office. "It is my belief that it is of the very essence of every problem that it contains and suggests its own solution. This I believe to be natural law."

Art Nouveau develops on the Continent, especially France and Belgium. Its proponents pick up certain ideas from earlier movements but develop a new formal language no longer closely based on historical styles. Curvilinear shapes and the use of iron characterize Art Nouveau.

diverse set of attitudes towards the Classical past. Different authors and architects took different positions, but most were reacting to some extent against what they saw as the excesses of Baroque architecture.

Frank Lloyd Wright

Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) is born in Wisconsin and establishes himself in Chicago, working for Sullivan from 1897-93. He becomes a leading figure in the Arts & Crafts movement there, and he argues for the integration of the arts and for the comprehensive design of buildings. Wright, though, asserts that the machine is a fundamental element of modern life and does not look back to historical methods. Wright's concepts of organic architecture are related to Sullivan's belief that the laws of architecture come from nature. Wright argues that architecture must develop from the conditions of its users, materials, and site.
