What are the symptoms of arousal?

-Faster HR -Faster BR -Sweating -Ability to focus (concentrate) -Response to danger (fight or flight adrenaline response)

Effects of arousal on technique:

-The point of optimum arousal = crucial importance to the learning and stability of a sportsperson's technique. -Technique = the sequence of actions which enables a performer to successfully perform the skill of their event. -Overarousal = cause performer to change their technique in an uncontrolled way, with a resultant loss of performance -Anxiety

What factors affect optimum arousal? (depeneds on...)

-Type of activity -The skill of the performer -The personality of the performer

What is arousal?

A state of mental and physical readiness for action

What type of skill does Hull's approach apply to?

Gross skills

Is the optimum level of arousal always in the centre?

No. Hanin worked out that depending on the athlete and what sport they are doing, what personality they are and how skilled they are, where their optimum level of arousal is will vary. E.g. some will peak at a low arousal.

What does Hull's drive theory describe

The higher the arousal level, the higher the achievement or performance level.

What is habit?

The strength and permanence of a correctly learned skill.

What does the Inverted-U Theory decribe?

There is an optimum level of arousal. As arousal increases, performance increases up to a certain point. If aroused more than this, the performance will go down.
