Arts1101
Location
specific placement of a line within the composition
Implied Line
a line that dims, fades, stops, and/or disappears. The missing portion of the line is implied to continue, and is visually completed by the observer as the line reappears.
Cross-contour
a line that moves across a shape or object to define the surface undulations (wave like movements) between the outermost edges.
Volume
a measurable amount of three-dimensional space. In other words, a three-dimensional enclosure.
Actual Shape
a positive area with clearly defined boundaries (as opposed to an implied shape).
Implied Shape
a shape that does not physically exist but is suggested through the psychological connection of dots, lines, areas, or their edges. The human mind's ability to connect this fragmented information is called the law of closure.
Positive Shape
a shape that is distinguished from the background, commonly referred to as the figure.
Amorphous Shape
a shape without clear definition: formless, indistinct and uncertain dimensions.
Shape
an area that stands out from its surroundings because of defined or implied boundary or because of differences in value, color, or texture.
Geometric Shape
appears related to geometry, mathematically inspired. precise and regular, such as triangles and squares.
Objective Shape
based as closely as possible on physical reality.
Contour Hatching Lines
can be form of the outside edge line
Subjective Shape
derived from the mind, imagination rather than physical reality.
five stages of chiaroscuro shading
highlight, shading, core shadow, reflected light, and cast shadow.
Type
straight, angular or curved
Negative Shapes
the area around a positive shape, often referred to as the ground.
Silhouette
the area between or bounded by the contours, or edges, of an object; the total shape.
Chromatic value
this type of value consists of the relative degree of lightness or darkness of a color.
Measure
length and width of line- its measurable properties
Contour line
line which defines the outermost limit/edge of an object or space. Often referred to as the "outline". The line which separates positive space and negative space.
Gestural Lines
lines that are drawn freely, quickly, and seemingly without inhibition in order to capture the intrinsic spirit and animation seen in the subject.
Line networks
or multiple lines, can be grouped together to indicate light and shadow and the illusion of space.
Direction
general movement of the overall line
Cross-hatching Lines
Same direction but added more different directions
Value
Sometimes referred to as tone, or tonal range. it is the relative lightness and corresponding darkness of an object or color.
Line
The path of a moving point made by a tool, instrument, or medium as it moves across an area. it is usually made visible because it contrasts in value with its surroundings.
Sfumato
a technique devised by Leonardo da Vinci of softly blending areas from light to dark, creating subtle transitions. Images often have vague outlines and a hazy or smoky appearance.
Chiaroscuro
a technique or representation that blends light and shadow gradually to create the illusion of three-dimensional objects in space or atmosphere.
Low-Key Value
a value that has a level of middle gray or darker.
High-Key Value
a value that has a value of middle gray or lighter.
Biomorphic Shape
irregular shapes that resembles natural organisms. shapes are made from rounding, curving, and often undulating edges that suggest living organisms or natural forces. Sometimes referred to as organic shapes.
Plastic value
is value used to create the illusion of space, volume, and depth
Decorative value
is value which stresses the two-dimensional nature of the artwork
Calligraphic Lines
lines that are generally flowing and rhythmical, like the qualities found in the kind of writing called calligraphy The word calligraphy is derived from two Greek words: kalus, meaning "beautiful," and graphein, meaning "to write."
Shape types include
objective, subjective, geometric, biomorphic, actual, implied and amorphous shapes.
Achromatic value
this type of value consists of whites, blacks, and grays and relates solely to differences of lightness and darkness, without regard for hue (color) or intensity.
Character
visual surface quality related to the medium with which the line is created
