What are authentic assessments? Provide an example.

A meaningful performance task the learner applies to demonstrate knowledge, skill, strengths, and needs in a realistic authentic manner. (Example: Exhibits, Projects, Portfolios)

We talked about portfolios being used to tell a story about student learning. However, the text emphasizes that portfolios should not be considered an assessment. Explain what a portfolio is and at least three items it should include. Discuss why it should not be considered an assessment.

A portfolio is a collection of student work assembled to tell a story about their learning. It should include artifacts or examples of student work, feedback about that work, student self-assessments, multiple drafts of work with revisions, and student reflections about their learning. It is thought of as a collection of assessments, not an assessment itself.

There are two basic structure choices for high-quality rubrics, one utilizes a single rating scale, while the other utilizes two or more rating scales--name the two rubric structures.

Analytic (multiple rating scales) and holistic (single rating scales) rubrics.

List two considerations that play a role in determining the sample size for an assessment.

Assessment Purpose, The nature of the learning target, the Importance of the learning target to later learning, the assessment method, the students themselves

Explain why all assessments should be valid and reliable.

Assessments should be valid and reliable because assessments need to be able to measure what they are supposed to (if you are quizzing a student on cursive, you shouldn't take away points because they misspelled a word if that is not part of the assessment). Assessments need to be reliable by reflecting a consistent score. If assessments are not reliable and scores are all over the place due to some other influence, the assessment is unreliable.

What are three benefits of student led conferences?

It increases dialogue between students and parents about their work in the classroom Parents receive more information about their activities in the classroom Allows them to explain their work They are not being talked about during the conference but rather being talked to. This gives them the chance to explain thinking and discuss areas of weakness/strength It increases responsibility for the students Increased attentiveness with assignments Organization skills improved when presenting notebooks/portfolios Establish self goals

There are four guidelines for successful record keeping of assessments. Name two of the four.

All assignments and assessments must reflect achievement of learning targets. Students must know which learning targets are represented by each assignment. Students must understand standards of quality. Teachers must keep an eye on student progress.

Which of these is not one of the purposes of assessment? a.For teachers to diagnose instructional needs prior to or during instruction b.For students to self-assess and set goals for next steps c.For teachers to provide extra work for their students d.For teachers to measure level of achievement for grading purposes

For teachers to provide extra work for their students

A high quality extended response: (i) sets the context, (ii) tells what to describe or explain; identifies the pattern of reasoning; or describes the reasoning task, (iii) points the way to an appropriate response. Create an appropriate extended response prompt for a 5th grade assessment (any content) and explain how it meets the criteria above.

In order to create a high-quality extended response question you must have a clear context. Second, you need a statement of what students are to explain.Lastly, you need guidelines for an appropriate response.

Which of the following terms is used to describe the goal orientation of a student who focuses their effort on improving their work and mastering what they don't know?

Which of the following is NOT a high quality multiple choice guideline? a.Be sure there is only one correct/best answer. b.Make all response options different lengths. c.State whole questions in item stem. d.Limit use of "all" or "none of the above".

Make all response options different lengths.

Explain the difference between performance skill targets and product targets.

Performance Targets have students perform a task to show what they have learned usually this is in the form of a skill like being able to give an oral presentation to the class. Product targets require students to produce something tangible to demonstrate what they have le

If the learning target can be assessed by more than one assessment method (selected response, written response, performance assessment, personal communication), when should performance assessments be used?

Performance assessment should be used when there is plenty of time to conduct it. When using performance assessment, it is a labor-intensive method and should be implemented only when there is enough time to do it well.

Describe two goals of a balanced assessment system.

Pre-assessment, formative and summative.

What are the limitations of standardized testing? Explain at least 2 limitations with detail.

Student performance can be determined by outside forces Emotions Fatigue Home issues Hunger Difficult for students with IEPs and/or ELL students to navigate Accommodations are limited for these tests. What students are used to are not always available during testing Unrelated to class content or real world scenarios Snapshot in time It only shows that day, not previous and future knowledge. Outside forces play huge roles in this Bias Test must be valid and reliable Gender and racial bias for instance Used for other reasons than intended purpose (should be testing student knowledge) To review teacher performance To rate schools overall academic performance Using math score to determine if someone should become a doctor (for example)

Student should be evaluated with a ______________, and this information should be used to determine the following: who needs re-teaching, who is ready to move on, and who needs the opportunity to self-assess.

rubric

Selected response questions have a reputation for objectivity. Why is this so? Why is this a myth?

There is a common myth that selected response is objective because it is often used to ask questions with only one correct answer. However, selected response questions can often be subjective. (THIS ANSWER IS NOT FINISHED)

List two of the scoring guide options for written response assessments

Consider the following assessment options: selected response, written response, performance, and personal communication. Explain how having the ability to complete many different types of these assessments would be beneficial to students in the classroom. Give a justification for each type of assessment listed above.

assessments allows for students to show their levels of understanding in many different ways. Some students are better at taking multiple choice tests or are better at answering essay questions. Some students are better at creating their own projects and some are better at saying their thoughts out loud. Having the ability to complete different types of assessments opens up opportunities for students that may have difficulties to show their understanding instead of having them all try to only complete one assessment. Give examples of how each type of assessment would be beneficial.)
