Author's purpose

An author's purpose is his reason for or intent in writing. An author's purpose may be to amuse the reader, to persuade the reader, to inform the reader, or to satirize a condition.

These OWL resources will help you develop and refine the arguments in your writing. There are three types of rhetorical appeals, or persuasive strategies, used in arguments to support claims and respond to opposing arguments

Argument

an exchange of diverging or opposite views, typically a heated or angry one

Extraneous

irrelevant or unrelated to the subject being dealt with

Bias

prejudice in favor of or against one thing, person, or group compared with another, usually in a way considered to be unfair

Evidence

something that makes plain or clear; an indication or sign

Claim

state or assert that something is the case, typically without providing evidence or proof.

Structure

the arrangement of and relations between the parts or elements of something complex

Syntax

the arrangement of words and phrases to create well-formed sentences in a language.

Rhetoric

the art of effective or persuasive speaking or writing, especially the use of figures of speech and other compositional techniques

Audience

the assembled spectators or listeners at a public event, such as a play, movie, concert, or meeting

Fluency

the quality or condition of being fluent, in particular.

Format

the way in which something is arranged or set out
