Beginner Level - Reading No. 1: Introducciones
Ajustarse a la vida en los Estados Unidos es difícil. Estoy en el último año de Preparatoria y no ha sido fácil. El idioma es la parte más difícil. Yo estudié 10 años de inglés en la escuela en México y mis padres también me enviaron a tomar clases privadas. Incluso con todo el inglés que estudié en México, encuentro difícil entender a los otros chicos de la escuela. Ellos hablan muy rápido y usan mucho argot. La mayoría de ellos no se molestan en hablarme, porque ya tienen su propio grupo de amigos. Es muy difícil hacer amigos en tu último año de Preparatoria. Usualmente almuerzo solo y después de la escuela veo televisión con mi tía y su familia. Se vuelve aburrido algunas veces, pero no tengo otra opción.
Adjusting to life in the United States is hard. I am in the last year of High School and it hasn't been easy. The language is the hardest part. I had 10 years of English in school in Mexico and my parents sent me for private classes as well. Even with all the English I studied in Mexico, I find it very hard to understand the other kids at school. They talk really fast and use a lot of slang. Most of them don't bother to talk to me as they already have their own group of friends. It is very difficult to make new friends in your last year of High School. I usually eat lunch alone and after school I watch TV with my Aunt and her family. It gets boring sometimes but I don't have a choice.
Todo parecía ir bien hasta que empezaron a charlar después del almuerzo. El padre de Michelle quería saber qué hacía Alex para ganarse la vida. Alex explicó que quería ser escritor y estaba buscando un editor para publicar un libro que había escrito. "¿De qué se trata el libro?" preguntó el padre de Michelle. "Se trata de un hombre que pierde su trabajo como Vicepresidente de una gran corporación. Él maneja por todo el país y por México donde descubre que el verdadero propósito de su vida es vender desodorante." Los padres de Michelle parecían un poco sorprendidos y se quedaron mudos por unos segundos. La misma idea pasaba por sus mentes. Si su hija se casaba con este tipo, ella tendría que ganarse el dinero por los dos. Alex añadió que por el momento ganaba su dinero vendiendo cosas por internet.
Everything seemed to be going well until they began chatting after lunch. Michelle's father wanted to know what Alex did for a living. Alex explained that he wanted to be a writer and was looking for a publisher to publish a book he had written. "What's the book about?" asked Michelle's father. "It's about a man who loses his job as Vice President of a large corporation. He drives across the country and into Mexico where he discovers that his true purpose in life is to sell deodorant." Michelle's parents looked a bit surprised and were silent for a few seconds. The same thought was going through both their minds. If their daughter married this guy, she would have to earn the money for the two of them. Alex added that for the moment he made his money selling things on the internet.
Afortunadamente, aparte del inglés, la mayoría de mis clases son muy fáciles. Física, química, biología y matemáticas eran mucho más difíciles en México. Historia Americana es aburrida. La única parte que me gusta son la Primera y Segunda guerras mundiales. Las tareas son usualmente tan fáciles, que las termino incluso antes de que el bus llegue para llevarnos a casa. Cuando estoy en casa, trato de leer libros y veo las noticias para mejorar mi inglés.
Fortunately, apart from English most of my classes are really easy. Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics were much harder in Mexico. American history is boring. The only part I like is the part about the First and Second World War. The homework is usually so easy that I finish it even before the bus arrives to take us home. When I'm at home, I try to read books or watch the news to improve my English.
¡Hola! ¿Qué hay de nuevo? Soy Roberto. Tengo 26 años y me acabo de mudar a mi propio apartamento. ¡Me encanta! Puedo hacer lo que yo quiera y no tengo a mis padres quejándose acerca de limpiar mi cuarto, lavar los platos o sacar la basura. Simplemente me quedo levantado hasta tarde jugando videojuegos o salgo a tomar con mis amigos. Luego puedo dormir hasta el mediodía. No creo que algún día me casaré o tendré hijos. Me encanta no tener responsabilidades. Durante el día trabajo como camarero en un restaurante a unas cuadras de aquí. Mi turno empieza a las 11 am y termina a las 9 pm. Es un trabajo duro pero es divertido. Conozco gente interesante y las chicas me dan sus números de teléfono todo el tiempo. Me gustaría tener mi propio restaurante algún día y ganar más dinero, pero parece ser mucho trabajo. Pienso que por ahora simplemente disfrutaré de la vida y me preocuparé por ganar más dinero más tarde.
Hey! What's up? I have just moved into my own apartment. I love it! I can do whatever I want and I don't have my parents nagging me about cleaning my room, washing the dishes or taking out the garbage. I just stay up late at night playing video games or go out drinking with my friends. Then I can sleep till noon the next day. I don't think I will ever get married or have kids. I love not having any responsibilities. During the day I work as a waiter in a restaurant a few blocks away. It is hard work but it is fun. I meet interesting people and girls give me their phone numbers all the time. I would like to have my own restaurant one day and make more money but it seems like a lot of work. I think I'll just enjoy life for now and worry about making more money later.
Hola, mi nombre es Marco. Tengo 17 años y me mudé a los Estados Unidos con mis padres hace 2 años, desde el Perú. No tengo hermanos o hermanas; soy hijo único. Mis padres vinieron a los Estados Unidos porque no pudieron encontrar trabajo en el Perú. Mi tía y tío se mudaron aquí hace 12 años y tienen un restaurante. Mi padre trabaja como chef y mi madre trabaja como mesera en el restaurante. Es un trabajo difícil, pero ellos están felices de tener ahora suficiente dinero y de que yo tenga la oportunidad de obtener una buena educación. Dejar el Perú fue difícil para mí. Allá tenía mucha familia y amigos. Yo sólo podía hablar un poco de inglés y mi familia no tenía mucho dinero. Las cosas van mejor ahora. He hecho algunos amigos y estoy aprendiendo inglés rápido. Me voy a graduar de preparatoria el próximo año y espero ir a la universidad. Después de eso obtendré un trabajo como ingeniero y haré mucho dinero para que mis padres ya no tengan que trabajar tan duro.
Hi, I don't have any brothers or sisters; I am an only child. My parents came to this country because they could not find work in our homeland. My Aunt and Uncle had moved here over a decade ago and own a restaurant. My father works as a chef and my mother works as a waitress at the restaurant. It is hard work but they are happy that they now have enough money and that I have the opportunity to get a good education. Leaving Peru was hard for me. I had a lot of family and friends there. I could speak very little English and my family didn't have a lot of money. Things are better now. I have made a few friends and I am learning English fast. I will graduate High School next year and hope to go to college. After that I will get a job as an Engineer and make a lot of money so that my parents don't have to work so hard anymore.
¡Hola, soy Jennifer! Tengo 9 años. Vivo en Houston, Texas con mi madre, mi padre y mis dos hermanos. Me gusta ir a la escuela pero odio hacer tareas y tomar exámenes. En la escuela estudio inglés, español, ciencias naturales, ciencias sociales y matemáticas. Me encanta ir a la escuela y ver a mis amigos y profesores todos los días. También me gusta jugar béisbol después de la escuela. Yo no tengo hermanas, pero mi mejor amiga Olga es como mi hermana. Nosotras nos contamos todo. También estudiamos y vemos televisión juntas. Cuando crezca voy a ser enfermera y voy a cuidar a las personas enfermas.
I live with my mother, father, and two brothers. I like going to school but I hate doing homework and taking exams. I love going to school and seeing my friends and teachers every day. I also like to play baseball after school. I don't have a sister but my best friend is just like my sister. We tell each other everything. We also study and watch TV together. When I grow up I'm going to be a nurse and take care of sick people.
Hola, mi nombre es Martha. Tengo 41 años y soy casada con dos hijos. Vivo en Hoboken, que está en el estado de Nueva Jersey, en la costa este de los Estados Unidos. Trabajo medio tiempo en una librería. Es un gran trabajo. Puedo leer tantos libros gratis como quiera y puedo pasar bastante tiempo con mis hijos. I work part-time in a bookstore. It is a great job. I can read as many books as I want for free and I get to spend plenty of time with my kids. My husband has his own business and works from early in the morning until late at night. One day he will sell the business for a lot of money so that he can spend more time with his family. When I am not working, I spend most of my time cleaning the house, doing the laundry, paying the bills and cooking for the family. I would like my husband to sell his business soon so that he can spend more time with us.
Yo dejaría de ir a su casa, pero su hermana Klaudia es la chica más hermosa que he visto. Sigo yendo a su casa con la esperanza de poder hablar con ella, pero ella apenas me mira. Ella está en la universidad y está estudiando para ser abogada. Es muy inteligente y no tiene novio. I would stop going to his house but his sister Klaudia is the most beautiful girl I have ever seen. I keep going to his house hoping that I can talk to her but she barely notices me. She is in college and is studying to be a lawyer. She is very smart and doesn't have a boyfriend. I watch every TV show about lawyers so that if she ever does talk to me I will sound smart. Maybe then she would go on a date with me.
En la tarde, ella fue al supermercado y compró comestibles. Compró pollo, pasta, lechuga, tomate, zanahorias y pepino. También compró salsa para pasta y aderezo para ensaladas. Como está tratando de perder peso, ella no compró helado ni papas fritas. Por el contrario, compró algunos bananos, naranjas, manzanas, uvas y fresas. Después de llegar a casa, marinó el pollo y lo puso en la nevera para poderlo cocinar en el horno más tarde.
In the afternoon she went to the supermarket and shopped for groceries. She bought chicken, pasta, lettuce, tomato, carrots, and cucumber. She also bought pasta sauce and salad dressing. Since she is trying to lose weight, she didn't buy any ice cream or potato chips. She bought some bananas, oranges, apples, grapes and strawberries instead. After she got home, she marinated the chicken and put it in the refrigerator so that she would be able to cook it in the oven later.
A las 5 de la tarde, se encontró con Alex y fueron a la clase de francés juntos. El tema de ese día fue el subjuntivo que es muy difícil para los hablantes de inglés. La única forma de aprenderlo es practicándolo tan frecuentemente como sea posible, por esta razón Alex y ella habían estado haciendo muchos ejercicios utilizando el subjuntivo. Después de la clase, fueron a la casa de Michelle a ver una película. Michelle puso el pollo en el horno y abrió una botella de vino para disfrutarla durante la película. La película era un film francés llamado "El armario" protagonizado por Gerard Depardieu y Daniel Auteuil. Como fue una gran comedia, ellos se rieron mucho, pero también aprendieron bastantes palabras y expresiones en francés.
Later that afternoon, she met up with him and they went to their French class together. The topic of that day was the subjunctive which is very difficult for English speakers. The only way to learn it is to practice it as often as possible so they had been doing plenty of written exercises using the subjunctive. After the class they went home to a friend's house to watch a movie. She put the chicken in the oven and opened a bottle of wine for them to enjoy during the movie. The movie was a French film called "The Closet". As it was a great comedy, they laughed a lot but also learned plenty of new French words and expressions.
Mudarse a un país nuevo es difícil, especialmente cuando tienes 17 años. ¡Hay tantas cosas nuevas para aprender y acostumbrarse! Soy Ricardo y me mudé a Los Ángeles de Juárez, México hace un año. Vivo con mi tía y su familia. Ellos son muy amables conmigo, pero extraño a mis padres y a mi hermana en mi país. Dicen que Juárez es una de las ciudades más peligrosas del mundo. Yo pienso que no es tan mala. Creo que cosas malas pasan en todas partes, y la mayoría de las personas allá son muy amables. Además, la comida es deliciosa. Algunas veces me gustaría poder regresar.
Moving to a new country is tough especially when you are 17. There are so many new things to learn and get used to. I'm Ricardo and I moved to Los Angeles from Juarez, Mexico a year ago. I live with my Aunt and her family. They are very nice to me but I miss my parents and sister back home. They say that Juarez is one of the most dangerous cities in the world. I don't think it is bad at all. I think bad things happen everywhere, and most people there are very nice. Plus, the food is delicious. Sometimes I wish I could go back.
Mi prima Natalia trata de ayudarme con mi inglés, pero en casa hablamos español todo el tiempo con la familia. Cambiamos a inglés solamente cuando estamos sólo nosotros dos. Hace unos meses, ella me invitó a salir con algunos de sus amigos, pero cuando ellos se dieron cuenta que yo no entendía muchas de las expresiones americanas, comenzaron a ignorarme. Después de eso le dije a Natalia que ya no tenía que invitarme, ya que no parecía agradarle mucho a sus amigos.
My cousin Natalia tries to help me with my English, but at home with the family we speak Spanish all the time. We switch to English, only when it's just the two of us. A few months ago, she invited me to go out with some of her friends but when they realized that I didn't understand many American expressions they began to ignore me. After that I told Natalia that she didn't have to invite me anymore since her friends didn't seem to like me very much.
El domingo por la mañana Michelle y Alex tomaron el tren de Nueva York a Nueva Jersey, donde los padres de ella viven. El viaje tomó alrededor de una hora. Sus padres los recogieron en la estación del tren y los llevaron a casa. La madre de Michelle había preparado un almuerzo delicioso para ellos. Empezaron con unos deliciosos aperitivos, seguidos por jugosas chuletas de cerdo con vegetales salteados y puré de papas. Fue delicioso. De postre, calentaron pastel de chocolate con fruta y helado.
On Sunday morning Michelle and Alex took the train from New York to New Jersey where her parents live. The trip took about an hour. Her parents picked them up at the train station and drove them home. Michelle's mother had prepared a delicious Sunday lunch for them. They started with some delicious appetizers followed by juicy pork chops with sautéed vegetables and mashed potatoes. It was delicious. For dessert they had warm chocolate cake with fruit and ice cream.
En su camino a casa, ellos pararon a comer pizza y helado. Le contaron a la mamá de Peter todo lo que pasó en la película y decidieron que debían ir a ver otra. Sin embargo, la próxima vez Shenaaz escogería la película. A Peter no le importó. ¡Él había tenido el mejor día de su vida!
On the way home, they stopped for piza and ice cream. They told his mother all about the movie and decided that they must go to another one. However, the next time she would pick the film. Peter didn't mind. He had just had the best day of his life!

On the way home, they talked about the visit. Alex didn't think that it went very well. "Did you see their faces when I told them about my book?" Michelle laughed. She didn't think there was any reason to worry. "When you become a famous author one day, they'll realize what a brilliant writer you are. I think they were more worried when I told them you were not Jewish." They talked and laughed on the way home. It had been a great weekend overall and they decided to stop for dinner at their favorite Chinese restaurant.
Una vez la película empezó, fue muy divertido. Todos los niños en el teatro se reían. Cuando Shenaaz no entendía algo, Peter se lo explicaba. Estuvieron cogidos de la mano durante la mayor parte de la película. Peter estaba seguro que estaba enamorado. Él se preguntaba si Shenaaz sentía lo mismo, pero tenía mucho miedo de preguntarle. Cuando la película se acabó, salieron juntos. A la salida, Shenaaz le dio un beso a Peter en la mejilla y le dijo cuánto había disfrutado la película. Ella pensó que algunas partes de la película eran un poco tontas, pero no quiso herir los sentimientos de Peter.
Once the movie started it was fun. All the kids in the theatre were laughing. When she didn't understand something, he explained it to her. They held hands during most of the movie. He was sure he was in love. He wondered if she felt the same way but he was too afraid to ask. When the movie was over, they walked out together. On the way out, she gave him a kiss on the cheek and told him how much she enjoyed the movie. She thought that some parts of the movie were a bit silly but she didn't want to hurt his feelings.
Peter tiene ahora 11 años. Un día él tuvo una idea. "¿Por qué no vamos al cine juntos?" le preguntó a Shenaaz. "No estoy segura", respondió ella. Shenaaz nunca había ido a ver una película en un teatro en los Estado Unidos. "¿Qué tan diferente es, a rentar un DVD y verlo en casa?" Peter estaba muy sorprendido con su pregunta. "¡Es muy diferente! ¡Lo primero es que la pantalla es gigante! El teatro es oscuro para que te puedas concentrar en la película. También estás con otras personas que están disfrutando de la película contigo". Shenaaz no estaba segura pero aceptó intentarlo.
One day he had an idea. "Why don't we go to a movie together? "he asked. "I'm not sure" she replied. She had never been to a movie theatre in the United States. "How is it different from renting and watching it at home?" He was very surprised by her question. "It's very different. The first thing is that the screen is huge! The theatre is dark so you can really focus on the movie. You are also with other people who are enjoying the movie along with you." She wasn't sure but she agreed to try it.
Recientemente, hice un amigo en mi clase de física. Su nombre es Jan. Su familia inmigró a los Estados Unidos desde Polonia hace 10 años. Él generalmente me invita a su casa para trabajar en nuestra tarea de física. Usualmente me copia la tarea, porque no quiere leer el libro o prestar atención a la clase. Él habla de fútbol americano todo el tiempo. No importa cuántas veces le diga que me gusta el fútbol regular, no el americano, él continúa contándome todo acerca de cada juego que ve en la televisión.
Recently, I made a new friend in my Physics class. His name is Jan. His family immigrated to the United States from Poland 10 years ago. He usually invites me to his house to work on our Physics homework. He usually copies the homework from me because he doesn't want to read the book or pay attention in class. He talks about football all the time. It doesn't matter how many times I tell him that I like soccer, not football, he keeps telling me about every game he watches on TV.
Michelle tuvo una semana difícil en la oficina. Estaba muy contenta porque el fin de semana finalmente comenzaba. Tuvo que trabajar hasta las 8 de la noche el jueves y el viernes y todavía había una cosa más que tenía que terminar durante el fin de semana, antes del lunes. She had a difficult week at the office. She was very glad that the weekend had finally begun. She had to work until late on Thursday and Friday and there was still one more thing she needed to finish on the weekend before Monday. She decided that she would take care of it on Sunday night.
Shenaaz no estaba segura de cuál película quería ver, entonces dejó que Peter decidiera. A Peter le encanta Jackie Chan, así que escogió la película "El espía de la puerta de al lado", que es una comedia para niños. Shenaaz nunca había visto una película con Jackie Chan, así que ella aceptó. La mamá de Peter los llevó al teatro el siguiente sábado en la tarde. Ella le dio dinero a Peter para los tiquetes y las golosinas, y los esperó fuera del teatro.
She wasn't sure about what movie she wanted to see, so she let him decide. He loves the Chinese actor in one of the movies featured so he picked a comedy for kids. She had never seen a movie with by that actor so she agreed. His mother drove them to the theatre the following Saturday afternoon. She gave him money for the tickets and snacks and waited for them outside the theatre.
Ella se despertó a las 7 am el sábado por la mañana, tomó una ducha y fue al gimnasio a hacer ejercicio. Después, comió un desayuno rápido en casa, revisó las noticias por internet y respondió a sus emails. Para el almuerzo, se encontró con unos amigos en un pequeño café, donde hablaron sobre lo ocurrido durante la semana y ella les actualizó sobre su relación con Alex. Les dijo que iría a visitar a sus padres en Nueva Jersey el domingo y que Alex vendría con ella por primera vez. Sus amigos le dijeron que no se preocupara y que todo saldría bien.
She woke up Saturday morning took a shower and went to the gym to work out. After that, she had a quick breakfast at home, checked the news on the internet and replied to her emails. For lunch she met some friends at a small café where they talked about the week and she gave them an update about her relationship. She told them that she would be visiting her parents in New Jersey on Sunday and that he would come with her for the first time. Her friends told her not to worry and that everything would work out.
Hoy fue el mejor día en la vida de Peter (según él). Él fue al cine con Shenaaz. Como ya saben, Shenaaz se mudó a San Francisco desde el Líbano, y como ella no tiene sus propios libros, ellos se sientan juntos en la clase, para que Peter pueda compartir sus libros con ella. Ellos pasan la mayoría de los fines de semana juntos, viendo TV, haciendo tareas y llevando a Checkers (el perro de Peter) al parque. Ellos la pasan muy bien juntos, hablando de la escuela, de programas de televisión y de lo que les gustaría hacer cuando crezcan.
Today was the best day of his life (according to him). He went to the movies with a friend who just moved to the states from the Middle East. Since she doesn't have her own books, they sit together in class so that he can share his books with her. They spend most weekends together, watching TV, doing homework and taking his dog to the park. They have a great time together, talking about school, TV programs and what they would like to do when they grow up.
