bio review chapter 6 immune system
pathogen
something in your body that doesn't belong and will make you sick.
Vaccination
you get exposed to weak or dead version of a virus which teaches your body how to fight the actual virus without getting you sick.
naturally acquired immunity
you got sick with a disease and so your body knows how to fight it off, so you don't get it again
the immue system has a memory
your body can remember certain pathogens once it has been sick with them and can fight them off the next time it is exposed to them.
antigens
large molecules on the surface of pathogens - function like a name tag
bacterial infection
makes you sick but treated with antibiotics can't pre treat it.
be able to describe the difference between medically and naturally acquired Immunity.
medically- vaccination( intentional exposure to a dead or weakened virus) makes you immune naturally- get sick with a specific virus, later on you are immune to it.
nonspecific immunities of the body
designed like walls - keep out everything. skin, tears , saliva, mucus, snot boogers, nose hair.
white blood cells
destroy pathogens made in our bone marrow.
viruses can mutate
if a viris changes the way it looks, your body may no longer recognize it and you will get sick again
the immune system can tell the difference between itself and pathogens
if the immune system CAN'T tell the difference between good stuff and pathogens, with will either destroy everything destroy nothing and you will get sick and die HIV/AIDS - destroys your immune system which makes it difficult to fight off disease.
t- cells
ID and KILL pathogens - designed to attack SPECIFIC pathogens.
virus
a type of pathogen that can not be killed by antibiotics. makes you sick. use vanninations for viruses
Medically acquired Immunity
a vaccination or other medial way of treating a person to keep you from getting sick.
pathogens can be transmitted many different ways.
air direct contact ( high fives) water, body fluids, sneezies, shaving vapes and water bottles. sharing forks and chopsticks licking iphones touching urinals.
what are the body's vital signs?
blood pressure- 110/70 to 140/90 resting pules - 60-100 beats per minute temperature- 98.6 breathing rate- 10-20 breaths per minute
b-cells
produce ANTIBODIES "remember a disease
antibodies( what are they, and what they do.
produced by B cells, destory foreign pathogens. made of proteins.
