A: Alcoholism represents the hereditary nature of struggle. Alcoholism is a hereditary disorder, and travels through communities and families. Orange displays Jacquie Redfeather's battle with alcoholism as a battle against her past. Tony Loneman's fetal alcohol syndrome also represents how trauma can be passed on through family.

Edwin Black struggles with binge eating and is scared participate in real life because of the disconnect he feels between him and his Native identity, but once he is able to connect with his father and his Native heritage he starts to feel brave enough to regain his place in a community.

In The Burier, the main character lives in the city, where he feels lonely, despite being surrounded by many people. He struggles specifically because he lacks community and people who understand his spiritual side and the connection he has to the land. This is an issue with a lot of Indigenous people living in cities, who feel displaced and lonely without a cultural connection they would have had otherwise.

What is Louis in The Burrier do?

In the Burrier, the Louis references that on a reservation he would be busy in ceremony, as he had come from a long line of medicine men. In Indigenous cultures owls typically are a signs of death and are not to be looked at in the eyes. Therefore we can use the owl as a context clue that shows us that the Louis is forcing his customers to move on from this world and into death.

Many of the characters endings following the conclusion of the powwow are left to the reader's imagination. Some characters are alive, saved by woods posts like Dene Oxendene and others have endings that remain unclear like with Tony Loneman. The story being very character driven, Orange has open-ended endings for many of the characters because it reflects how many of them were in the story itself.
