Schematic Deisgn

An initial design scheme that seeks to define the general scope and conceptual design of the project including scale and relationships between building components.

2D

Analogous to painting or hand drafting. The architect's and engineer's equivalent to word-processing.

3D

Analogous to sculpture. Prior to computers, the architects manually constructed perspectives and physical models to represent a projects design concepts.

Building Information Modeling (BIM)

Digital representation of physical and functional characteristics of a facility. It is a shared knowledge resource for information about a facility forming a reliable basis for decisions during its life cycle. It creates intelligent 3D objects that interact like the real world objects they represent. These applications have parametric building elements and an integrated system for manipulating, quantifying, documenting and displaying them. It can store information and parameters related to all the components of the building.

Industry Foundation Classes (IFC)

How things such as a structure, doors, walls, and fans (as well as abstract concepts such as space, organization, information exchange, and process) should be described so that different software packages can use the same information.

Plan

In architecture and building engineering, a floor plan is a drawing to scale, showing a view from above, of the relationships between rooms, spaces and other physical features at one level of a structure (cut at 4 feet from ground level)

Section

In architecture and building engineering, a section shows a view along an imaginary line cut through the building, indicating structural and construction elements.

Elevation

In architecture and building engineering, an elevation is a horizontal orthographic projection of a building onto a vertical plan, the vertical plane normally being parallel to one side of the building.

Augmented Reality (AR)

Live direct or indirect view of a physical, real-world environment whos elements are augmented (or supplemented) by virtual computer-generated sensory input such as sound, video, graphics, or GPS data.

Parametric

Objects that reflect real-world behaviors, changes, and attributes are often called this.

The Construction Specifications Institute (CSI)

Organization that keeps and changes the standardization of construction language as it pertains to building specifications. This provides structured guidelines for specification writing.

Design-Bid-Build

Project delivery method in which the agency or owner contracts with separate entities for the design and construction of a project.

Level of Development (LOD)

Reference that enables practitioners in the AEC Industry to specify and articulate with a high level of clarity the content and reliability of BIM's at various stages in the design and construction process. To help teams, including owners, to specify BIM deliverables and to get a clear picture of what will be included in a BIM deliverable. To help design managers explain to their teams the information and detail that needs to be provided at various points in the design process. To provide a standard that can be referenced by contracts and BIM execution plans.

BIM Manage

Retained by a design build team on the clients behalf from the pre-design phase onwards to develop and to track the object-oriented BIM against predicted and measured performance objectives, supporting multi-disciplinary building information models that drive analysis, schedules, take-off and logistics.

REVIT

Software intended to allow architects and other building professionals to design and document a building by creating a parametric 3D model that included both the geometry and non-geometric design and construction information, which also known as BIM.

Construction Administration

Tasks carried out include facilitating project communication, maintaining project records, reviewing and certifying amounts due, contractors, and preparing change orders.

Cloud Based

Term that refers to applications, services, or resources made available to users on demand via the internet from a cloud computing provider's servers. To manage project information including data creation and the iterative process of exchanging data through the built environment value network: includes processes by which the right information is made available to the right person at the right time is called this.

Virtual Reality

The computer-generated simulation of a 3D image or environment that can be interacted with in a seemingly real or physical way by a person using special electronic equipment, such as a helmet with a screen inside or gloves fitted with sensors.

Collaboration

The introduction of working practice, methods, and behaviors that create a culture in which individuals and organizations are able to work together efficiently and effectively is called this.

Bidding and Negotiation

The process for delivering costs and terms to a construction project based on bidding documentation.

Design Development

The process is to define and describe all important aspects of the project so that all that remains is the formal documentation step of construction contract documents.

Construction Documents

The third stage of services provided by architect and/or engineer in which he or she prepares working drawings, specifications, and bidding documents.

Intelligent Object

These building components can behave smart, i.e., they can adapt to changing conditions.

Integrated Project Delivery (IPD)

This is a project delivery approach that integrates people, systems, business structures and practices into a process that collaboratively harnesses the talents and insights of all participants to optimize project results, increase value to the owner, reduce waste, and maximize efficiency. Risk and reward are shared.

Server Based

This system uses loosely coupled collections of drawings, each representing a portion of the complete model remotely located.

SketchUp

is a 3D surface modeling application that has basically 2 kinds of objects: faces and edges. Very popular tool with designers during the early phases of a project, but the lines blur when to stop modeling and start designing in BIM.
