Size
License
The arbitrary & uncontrolled exercise of one's personal autonomy. The "freedom" to choose & at however you want, without consequences.
Case of Roe v. Wade
1973; declared abortion a constitutional right. The court held that a woman's right to privacy includes her decision to have an abortion. This case declared abortion a constitutional right in the US.
The Principle of Double Effect
A formula used for evaluating the permissibility of an act that is morally good when the act causes an effect one is normally obliged to avoid.
Ordinary Medical Treatment
A person must always accept & allow this treatment. It includes standard medical care as well as food & water, even if the latter are administered artificially (as through a feeding tube).
Innocent

Abortion

Extraordinary Medical Treatment

Human Cloning
Intrinsically evil because it reduces the human procreation to a mere manufacturing process.
True "Compassion"
Leads to sharing another's pain; it does not kill the person whose suffering we cannot bear.
The "L" in SLED
Level of development
How many cures have been attributed to adult stem cell research so far?
More than 73 cures
Is capital punishment considered an intrinsic evil?
No, because it can be used to protect the common good. Self-Defense: "Love of your own life" is an important tenet of morality, respecting the dignity of the human person includes protecting one's own life. "Innocent" menas a person who is not intending you harm at the particular moment. Protecting one's own life or the life of another when it is within our means is a moral obligation. This doesn't render a person guilty of murder. Taking the life of another is only a last resort. The death penalty is the only way to stop an unjust aggressor & protect citizens' lives, legitimate authority has the prerogative to impose the death penalty.
Does the Church oppose stem cell research?
No, because many stem cells can be obtained without the loss of life, which are known as adult stem cells. Stem cells are a vital way for the body's cells to be replenished & offer hope for the cure of certain diseases.
Reform
One of the traditional reasons for punishing someone.
Who does Project Rachel minister to?
Provides the one-on-one care of specially trained clergy, spiritual directors, & therapists to women & men who are experiencing emotional struggles after an abortion.
What is Norma McCorvey currently dedicating her life to?
She converted to Catholicism in 1998. She is now dedicating her life to reversing the infamous case that legalized abortion, Roe v. Wade.
Nonlethal Means
Sufficient to defend & protect people's safety from the aggressor. "Are more in keeping with the concrete conditions of the common good & more in conformity with the dignity of the human person."
What is the Church's stance against abortion in the situation of rape?
The child himself or herself is no less of a person than a child conceived in the most ideal situation. The Church's stance against abortion is not meant as an uncompassionate treatment of the woman who has experienced such violence, but instead a refusal to allow violence to be extended to another innocent victim, the unborn baby.
Murder
The deliberate killing of an innocent human person.
The first theme of Catholic Social Teaching
The life and dignity of the human person
Freedom
The power to choose the good for the sake of the good. Choosing the bad, then you're enslaved from freedom. Bad sounds exciting at first, but then there are bad consequences.
Personalistic Norm
The principle that seeks to affirm the unique value of each human person in the world of nature
Physician-Assisted Suicide
The process of ending one's own life with the help of a doctor rather than directly by the doctor's hand.
Incarnation
When God became human in the person of Jesus.
Is it acceptable for a Catholic politician or voter to support a law that does not immediately end all abortions but would begin to reduce the number of abortions?
Yes, because Catholics are not bound to obey such laws, & must instead work to reform them.
Is human cloning intrinsically evil?
Yes, because it reduces human procreation to a mere manufacturing process, producing new human beings in the laboratory to predetermined specifications as though they were commodities.
At its core, does reproductive cloning reduce the person to an object to be manipulated & controlled by another, even before he or she comes into existence?
Yes, because part of what makes humans unique is the unrepeatable beings with differences between them. It is greatly contrary to the personalistic norm.
If human cloning were achieved, would the "result" (aka human person) still have dignity?
Yes.
