Cell Division; Mitosis/Meiosis
Why does mitosis take place?
1. Growth 2. Maintenance/ Repair of the body 3. Reproduction
Cell Division
1. is an exact process 2. The nucleus is separated into 2 cells. 3. This process assumes that the cell's DNA has copied itself. 4. During this process, each of the 2 cells have their own DNA 5. This whole process takes 2-3 hours
What happens when meiosis takes place?
2n cells divide
What happens when mitosis takes place?
A diploid cell or 2n cell is formed --somate or somatic cell --a body cell
For whom or what does meiosis take place?
All sexually reproducing organisms
When does meiosis take place?
Human females: From 3 months of age prenatal (in the womb) until menopause (40's to 50's) Human males: From puberty (12-13) until death
Where does meiosis take place?
In the gonads: ovaries for females testes for males
Why does meiosis take place?
Meiosis takes place to produce 2 gametes or sex cells
When does mitosis take place?
Mitosis takes place from conception (birth) until death
Where does mitosis take place?
Mitosis takes place in all cells of the body.
What is the product of meiosis?
Potentially 4 haploid cells
Interphase
This is the phase of the cell's existence when the cell: 1. is not undergoing cell division 2. is in a resting phase 3. does most of its work 4. grows 5. has a definite -nucleus -nucleolus - nuclear membrane
2. Cytokinesis
This process takes place during cell division and is the separation of cell's cytoplasm which doesn't have to be an exact process.
What is the product of mitosis?
Two daughter cells are produced that are exactly like the mother cell.
In whom or what does mitosis occur?
all cellular organisms
