Cell Organelles Identification/ Cell Functions

Ace your homework & exams now with Quizwiz!

Nucleus

DNA and RNA is stored here and it produces ribisomes. Found ONLY in eukaryotic (plant and animal) cells

Nuclear Envelope

Double membrane surrounding nucleus Contains pores for material to enter and exit the nucleus. Found in Eukaryotic (BOTH plant and animal) cells only

Nucleolus

Found inside the nucleus - cells may have 1-3 Makes ribosomes that make proteins Found in BOTH plant and animal cells

Cytoskeleton

Helps cell maintain cell shape Also help move organelles around Found in BOTH plant and animal cells

Vacuole

In plant cells it stores waste products, nutrients, and water. Found in BOTH plant and animal cells.

Cytoplasm

Jelly-like substance that all the organelles floating in. Provides a medium for chemical reactions to take place. Found in ALL cells

Centrioles

Paired structures near nucleus. Help to pull chromosome pairs apart to opposite ends of the cell Found ONLY in animal cells

Flagella

Tail-like structure found in prokaryotic and some animal cells

Ribosome

They make proteins for the cell. Found in ALL cells

Cell Membrane

This acts as a protective barrier around the cell. Controls what enters or leaves the cell Found in ALL cells

Lysosome

This breaks down materials within a cell. This is ONLY in animal cells

Cell Wall

This is a thick outer layer in plant cells made of cellulose. It is also found in fungi, algae, and some bacteria. This is ONLY in plant cells and prokaryotic cells NOT animal cells

Organelle

This is a tiny organ within a cell that carries out a specific task

Golgi Apparatus/Golgi Bodies

This is the cell's post office. It puts the finishing touches on molecules and transports them. Found in BOTH plants and animal cells

Endoplasmic Reticulum

This is the highway of the cell. It transports proteins and other cell products. Two types - rough and smooth. Found in BOTH plant and animal cells

Mitochondria

This provides energy to the cell. It is bean shaped and is the powerhouse of the cell. Found in BOTH plant and animal cells

Chloroplast

This uses carbon dioxide, water and sunlight to carry out photosynthesis. This is found in plant cells and some protists. This is ONLY in plant cells
