Contains primitive instincts such as sex and aggression.

-2nd psychic structure -structure to DEVELOP (age 1) -characterized by self-awareness, planning, and delay of gratification -Stands for reason and good sense, for rational ways of coping with frustration -Seeks to find gratification yet avoid social disproval -CONSCIOUS SENSE OF SELF

superego

-3rd psychic structure -Develops as the child incorporates the moral standards and values of parents and other members of the community

Psychoanalytic theory

-SIGMUND FREUD -emphasizes the importance of unconscious motives and conflicts as forces that determine behavior -personality is characterized by CONFLICT - 1st conflict is external (sex, aggression) then the conflict is directed inward

Psychoanalysis

People are encouraged to talk about anything that pops into their mind while they remain comfortable and relaxed

identification

in psychoanalytic theory, the unconscious adoption of another person's behavior

Repression

the automatic ejection of anxiety-evoking ideas ideas from awareness
