What is General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS)?
developed by Selye, it has 3 stages: 1. alarm reaction (fight-orflight) 2. resistance or adaptation (stressor not removed & the body adjusts to function under the stressful condition) 3. exhaustion (body begins to deteriorate & increased risk of illness)
Definition of acute stress.
lasts for a short time & is easy to manage, most common form, example would be studying for exams or caring for a sick child
Definition of distress.
negative stressors like getting into a car accident, experiencing death, or breaking up w/ a boyfriend/girlfriend
Definition of stress.
person's physical/emotional reaction to a situation or event
Definition of stress response.
physiological changes associated with stress
Definition of eustress.
positive stressors like going on a family vacation, having a baby, or getting promoted at work

situation causing the stress
Definition of chronic stress.
the result of constantly experiencing stressors, it does not go away, difficult for the body to relax and its hard to bring its systems back to normal, high risk for adverse health effects, needs professional help for treatment

What are the four types of stress?

Definition of episodic acute stress.
consistently experience acute stress, can cause you to be disorganized/short-tempered/irritable, example would be working on a project that has several deadlines or planning a wedding
Definition of traumatic stress.
happens when a person experiences a dangerous or life-threatening event, examples would be rape/child abuse/war, PTSD can develop as early as 3 months after the event, requires professional help for treatment and can take months to cure
