Active listening

Voluntary act of focusing on what is being said, making sense of it, and thinking about it in a way that permits it to be recalled accurately

Rethink

- activating your memory - rethink as soon as possible - make rethinking an active process - think critically about the material in your notes

Strategies for using your notes

- ask questions about the material - pool your resources - ask privately and politely for instructor to alter the way material is presented - listen to the lecture when allowed -talk to professor after class - remember the class is only temporary

Considering your goals - identify instructors and your goals for the course - complete assignments before coming to class - accept the instructors limitations - prepare a pre-class warm up - choose a seat that will assist in good note taking

Organize

Getting the tools of note taking together - choose appropriate writing utensils - choose a notebook that assists in note taking - consider the benefits of taking your textbook to class - consider the pros and cons of using a laptop to take notes in class

Underlying main ideas that a speaker is seeking to convoy, or the meaning behind the overt message you hear

Processing, not copying info - listen for key ideas - abbreviations - notes in outline form - copy key info written on board or overheads
