Need
A deprivation that energizes the drive to eliminate or reduce the deprivation.
Hierarchy of Needs
A theoretical model of 5 needs that Maslow believed every human had; the needs range from basic physiological and safety needs, to love and belongingness, to esteem, and finally at the top of the hierarchy to the need for self-actualization.
Drive
An aroused state that occurs because of a physiological need.
Bulimia Nervosa
An eating disorder that has binging and purging pattern.
Anorexia Nervosa
An eating disorder that involves the relentless pursuit of thinness through starvation.
Instinct
An innate (unlearned), biological pattern of behavior that is assumed to be universal throughout a species.
Internal Locus of Control
Individuals attribute causes of their behavior to themselves.
External Locus of Control
Individuals attribute the causes of their behavior to factors outside of themselves.
Homeostatis
The body's tendency to maintain and equilibrium, or steady state
Intrinsic Motivation
The desire of students themselves to learn, without the for external inducements.
Extrinsic Motivation
Those rewards and inducements external to students
Motivation
Why people behave, think, and feel the way they do. Motivated behavior is energized, directed, and sustained.
