FTC alternative container

A non metal receptacle or enclosure, without ornamentation or fixed interior lining, designed for the encasement of human remains and which is made of cardboard, pressed wood, composition material or like materials

Columbarium

A structure, room, or space in a mausoleum or other building containing niches or recesses used to hold cremated remains.

Lot

A subdivision in a cemetery which consists of several graves or interment spaces.

Cemetery

a crypt in which the casket lies parallel to the crypt face.

Immediate Burial

a disposition of human remains by burial without formal viewing, visitation or ceremony with the body present, except for a graveside service.

a gasketed container which can be used as an insert into a casket or as a separate shipping container

Ledger

a grave marker set parallel to the ground that covers a grave completely

Slant marker

a headstone with a face set at a angle greater than 45 degrees, but less than 90 degrees, in relationship to the terrain

Bevel top marker

a headstone with a face set at an angle of less than 45 degrees in relationship to the terrain.

Flush marker

a headstone with the face set parallel in a relationship to the terrain

pouch

a leak resistant zippered bag designed to contain a dead human body and body fluids and is used mainly for the removal of dead human remains from the place of death.

Die (tablet)

a main part of a monument, the upright portion above the base where the inscription is located.

Cenotaph

a monument erected to the memory of the dead, with the dead human body not present

cremation pouch

a non-rigid, combustible cremation-friendly bag used for human remains

Niche

a recess or space in a columbarium used for the permanent placing of cremated remains

Rental casket insert

a removable casket liner suitable to hold human remains in a reusable casket.

Casket liner

a removable metal unit placed inside a wooden casket shell to provide protective qualities

Scattering Garden

a section in a cemetery set aside for the scattering of cremated human remains

Funeral ceremony

a service commemorating the deceased with the body present

Monolith

a single massive stone or rock, or a large piece of stone or rock, placed as a monument or marker.

Monument

a structure, usually of stone or metal, erected to commemorate the life, deeds, or career of a deceased person; from the Latin word meaning to remind.

Section

a subdivision of a cemetery containing several blocks

Air tray

a transfer container consisting of a wooden tray with a cardboard covering for the casket

combination case (aka combo case)

a transfer container for uncasketed remains consisting of a particle board tray with a cardboard cover

Bench

a type of cemetery memorial consisting of a top piece supported by two standards; used to identify family burial plots or used in conjunction with a family monument.

Vertical Tablet

a type of cemetery monument in which the die is taller than it is wide.

Horizontal Tablet

a type of cemetery monument in which the die is wider than it is tall.

Mausoleum

an above ground structure or building containing crypts or vaults for entombment of caskets; which may also include niches for cremated remains.

Alternative Container

an enclosure for human remains in preparation for cremations. The container is composed of an appropriate combustible material; rigid enough for handling ease; assure the protection of the health and safety of the crematory operator; as well provide appropriate covering for the remains

Transfer Container

an enclosure used for the protection of human remains during transportation

Grave

an excavation in the earth as a place for interment

Epitaph

an inscription placed on a monument to commemorate the deeds or qualities of the deceased.

Marker

an object, usually of on piece, used to identify individual graves

Graveside service

ceremony commemorating the deceased at place of final disposition

Composition board (particle board, pressed board, fiberboard, hardboard)

particles of wood bonded together with waterproof glue; the different types are distinguished by the size and shape of the particles of wood used.

physical object designed for the purpose of remembering an individual, group, or event.

Ossuary

receptacle for communal placement of cremated and/or skeletal remains

Base

the lower or supporting part of a monument. In some monuments, there may be a first, second , and third base.

Sundry items

the miscellaneous items provided or used to complement the services of a funeral director, i.e. register books, acknowledgment cards, memorial folders/programs, religious paraphernalia, flag case, etc.

Crematory (Crematorium)

A furnace or retort for cremating dead human bodies; a building that houses a retort.

Lawn Crypt

A grave space where two or more persons may be buried in a grave liner which have been stacked one on top of the other, with the first who dies being buried in the deepest liner.
